In the book Sam is a shape shifter who prefers the take the shape of a dog, that's why you always see that lassie dog around. Remember after he slept with Tara he was growling in his sleep? He can also take on other shapes, i guess he prefers doggy.

I am personally more offended by "It is just not healthy/I am concerned for their health" type comments than with outright "I think it looks ugly and it disgusts me". Cause the first type just make me wanna say "Oh please, you are not concerned. You just wanna point out that you are 'naturally thin' and therefore so much better than those people".
