@PeachesNCreamYa: Yay derby! I love that every body type has advantages and disadvantages in derby - there is a place for everyone.

I was super non-athletic growing up, and was never really encouraged to participate in sports, and looking back I think about how tragic that is. I am a superwoman despite not looking like one, and I feel strongly now that we need to make sports an important part of growing up for all kids, like art and music should be, too.
At the Halloween party I went to, there was a lady in full on blackface, no joke. I was HORRIFIED.
@rmric0.wedding.photographer.and.manny: Right? I starting sobbing today at work reading an article about rape - not the article itself, but the comments from a dude who was going off on the she-deserved-it route. It's really horrifying that these people exist, I'm not really sure I want to know exactly how many of them there are. My faith in humanity would like to believe it's not really that bad....
@Katharsis: I think he's referring to other designers' and magazine editors' ability to say no, not models. At least that's what I hope he means.
@hamburgerhotdog: I got mine at 39dollarglasses.com, and yes, prescription. You just have to figure out the distance between your pupils (in mm, I think), which either your eye doctor can do or you can measure yourself in the mirror (which is what I did). Definitely check out glassyeyes.com for discounts and deals - I got three pairs for about $75 total thanks to them. I got the idea from Lifehacker: [lifehacker.com]
I just recently started buying glasses online. I figure for under $50, I can afford a mistake in style, color, etc. Plus now I have multiple pairs for different moods, outfits, etc. It's wonderful!
@shefightsback: No kidding, I am in NH and I saw green things starting to peek from the ground today. The world is upside down! (And I'm totally jealous of all the snow "down south.")
@stacyinbean: not to mention the fact that just recently they laid off 20% of their staff...nothing like a little fiscal responsibility!
@wooden_shoes: Good luck!! You should check out derbuy.com - they have used skates on there for pretty cheap. I have some "entry-level" skates, and I am starting to save up for new ones. The Gotham Girls rock - good luck to you!!
@Spaghetti Cat: It's covered in my plan - elective and otherwise. I checked a while ago because I'm curious. :) #healthnuts
@curiousgeorgiana: ok, but what IS a chifferobe?? I assume it's some kind of old-timey or southern thing that I just don't know about (or I call it something different). #deaths
@willwriteforfood: I'm so sorry. My Senator (Gregg) voted against this, but I can at least hold a candle of hope in my heart because he's not running for re-election next time. #frankenamendment
I think that next time they do one of these challenges, they should actually surprise the cast by taking them all to rehab/anger management training instead. It would be HILARIOUS, and most of them clearly need it. #realworldroadruleschallengewes
@laureneclare000: It's also amazing that the people who don't support abortion always assume it is sad and horrible. My abortion was probably the best choice I ever made, and there is not an iota of regret in my body over it. Please stop treating me like a simpleton or a sob story, because I am neither.
@FizzyGood: yeah, they (anti-abortion folks) are actually in the middle of what's known as "40 days for life," so there's been extra activity lately. I just started volunteering at my local Planned Parenthood to be a "greeter," and it feels really good to stand up to these people. Though with regards to pictures, the only one I've seen (that wasn't the Virgin Mary) was this REALLY UGLY baby. I don't get it -- wouldn't you pick the cutest darn baby you could find to encourage choosing life? wtf??
@formergr: it's like the onion's anti-smoking campaign: [www.theonion.com]
This is actually why I joined derby; it seemed like a fun sport to do, and a good way to make friends with like-minded women. I think it's true what some others here have said that there is this kind of cooler-than-thou attitude some derby girls have, but I think it varies by team - some are WAY into the fishnets and the sex appeal and the "fun" side of derby, and others are in it for the sport and the fishnets are just a fun piece of that. I'm on a team that really encourages the sport, and it's a great fit. I do think you have to prove yourself, but you have to do that with everyone, though it's not usually as cut-and-dry as tryouts or "making the team."
@l'américaine française: It is so true, and it's especially true if you move somewhere new for a career and kind of "give up" the support system you've built up over the years. I've had this conversation a couple times with different people, and it's really hard to cope when you feel like all you have is acquaintances and coworkers, and no real friends. I think it's especially hard with this kind of virtual community you have going on with facebook and whatever, because as much fun as it is to stay in touch with people and have these interactions, you're maybe still home alone on a Saturday night. (*sad trombone*)
@SlayBelle: isn't there a skater in Vegas who did that? I'm not sure if it's the same person, but apparently there's someone who built a banked track in their backyard in Vegas and has an open invitation to whoever wants to come and skate it. One of the girls on my team went to San Diego and practiced with them -- from the sounds of it, banked track is craaaazy. She said there's a 6" drop from the banked part of the track to the flat part. I think I'll stick with the flat track!
