Ditto. I'm 43 and this could be me. Everybody is struggling.
Yes. It's called The Lottery, but I don't recall the author. I read it in 5th or 6th grade, and it left a huge impression on me. I don't know if it is assigned reading these days. I have a 5th grader, and the assigned reading she gets tends toward biographical or dull inspirational-type stories. Not true short stories.
Oh goody. I guess I'm not the only one who was originally impressed that there were so many bluegrass fans on this site that the Carter Family was the top guess for a blind item, but alas. Just stupid boy banders.
Noooo. I'm sorry to hear about this as I enjoy your writing. I'm also sorry that it appears Gawker is going to be without a political writer in the midst of an election year. If that's true, I don't understand that logic at all, but I'm not in charge, sadly.
He was also on SNL. Also, according to wiki he was a regular performer on Solid Gold. Heh. I used to love that show.
hee! He sounds adorable.
We used to say Claude, our dear departed orange tabby, was really a golden retriever trapped in a cat's body because he was friendly and would invite himself onto visitor's laps, especially those who really hated cats. And he loved to get his belly rubbed.
I'm with you. We've owned our home for a little over 15 years. An old home, mind you, built in 1895 with beautiful hardwood floors, tall ceilings and huge windows, but also lots a problems. Like the garage that needs to be torn down and replaced, but we've have no money to do so. The flashing around our chimney that needs to be replaced. We lost also one our gutters last spring after a particularly bad storm. The refrigerator we installed new 12 years ago is breaking down, we have an oven that doesn't work (sometimes it heats, sometimes it doesn't) and a leaky upstairs toilet, which we did immediately fix, but not before it caused visible water damage to our dining room ceiling. Most of this happened in the last year and we've been struggling to figure out how to pay for it all. I don't miss having noisy upstair neighbors but there are days I miss renting. #crosstalk
That's exactly why I find the incident so disturbing. Either he was lurking around, perhaps looking to break into someone's house and saw an opportunity when my neighbor came home, or was specifically targeting her. #crosstalk
Thanks for the link. Apparently there has been more than a few strong arm robberies in our neighborhood in the past month. And lots of car thefts. I had no idea. But we have seen an uptick in property crimes too. Our neighbor caught some kids scaling her fence mid-afternoon, not realizing that she worked at home and had a prime view of her back yard. She scared them off. And another neighbor had his security lights on his garage vandalized just last week, which now I wonder if same person who attacked my neighbor was responsible. Either way the whole incident is creeping me out. #crosstalk
I woke to screams outside at 4:00 this morning. It was my next-door neighbor who had just stepped out of a taxi after a night out and had her purse snatched. What made this incident all the more unsettling is that the taxi was still idling in the street when the incident went down. In fact, the taxi driver watched the whole thing unfold and was beeping his horn in an effort to get someone's attention, but the thief brazenly still managed to knock her to the ground and make off with her bag on foot. My neighbor was unhurt, but incredibly shaken. In fact, the combination of hearing the horn blaring and her screams and then seeing her sitting on the curb crying next to an idling taxi made me originally made me think the taxi had hit her.

Anyway, I'm sharing because the incident left me pretty shaken. I couldn't sleep last night even before this happened, and had such a feeling of unease that I went downstairs and had a look around. Now I wonder if I hadn't heard the assailant prowling around outside our house. I do remember going back to bed at 3:30 and must have just drifted off to sleep when the attack happened. I live in a what I'd call a quiet Chicago neighborhood, most of residences are single-family homes with my neighbor living in one of the few apartments. It's mostly families with kids and older people with some young professionals, but it is a big city and crime is a problem. The poor girl had her house keys stolen with her purse and lives alone. She left shortly after the cops arrived and I haven't seen her since. As far as I know they haven't found the guy although I imagine there are lots of places he could have hidden. Besides, It took the police 10 minutes to respond, so I imagine he was long gone by then anyway. Part of me thinks he'll think twice about showing up in our neighborhood again -- the taxi driver said he got a good look at him -- but then again maybe not. #crosstalk

OMG. That hair!

I think that was taken when he was at Northwestern.

Well, they're being charged with money laundering and racketeering, so I'm guessing those millions weren't coming from online banner ads and paid memberships. Maybe not just from copyright infringement either.
Ooh. Dishy. I like this guess better than Katy Perry and Russell Brand.
That outfit only really works if you're seven.
I think she looks amazing. Love the hair, the cut of the jacket, and the color. The only thing I'm iffy about are her shoes. It's hard to tell in that photo but they look like they might be partially made of clear plastic. #crosstalk
Or her "accountant" is Dina Lohan.
But does she pay taxes on those earnings, I wonder.
There were pap pictures posted yesterday of David and his sons at LAX, after returning from London. Victoria and the baby were not with them. Presumably, they stayed in London, or maybe they returned earlier. But I'm guessing that is the basis for the blind.
