My parents and my two older brothers underwent naturalization in 1984. (I'm the only native-born yank in my family).
Immigration is screwed up in this country - the injustice currently closest to me is that my lesbian friend can't immigrate here "the easy way" because she can't legally get married.
But I'll always remember my parents' long struggle to immigrate, and how significant that ceremony was. However politicians play it, immigration is part of the lifeblood of our country: economically, culturally.
I'll never forget my mom's comment that when she saw a police officer, she was no longer afraid she'd be searched and possibly jailed without trial - as she might easily have been in her native South Africa in the 1980s.
How sad that the Arizona laws are a kind of parallel to this.
