Listen- no sweat. I had already passed off Lindsay's gaffe as ignorance- in part due to her lack of intelligence and in part due to her family's likely considerable ignorance wherein they would think it okay to be slightly racist and use the term colored.
What bothered me about your defense, was that it honestly wasn't that long ago and is a very specific and dividing term. I mean every inch of the south and even for a longtime the north had Colored Only signs. It bothers me that perhaps even you were less aware of the impact. I know you are a few years younger than I am, but not by much- but it does make me think that important history and context is being lost somewhere. I am glad you did re-read and see what all was being said. I didn't mean to come down on you so hard, but I was really concerned when you kept saying it was slang that was just outmoded. Consider us cool- and please, don't worry about it.

@MegSpencer: It's not "slang" Meg. It was a specific term, a way of denoting someone as other and less. I think the idea of saying that "her generation" is less informed is idiotic, yes.
Furthermore, the term wasn't out of use 20 years before your birth. Perhaps you will recall that MLK Jr was killed in 1968. Believe me when I tell you that "colored" was still being used.
