@DonnaPirana (junior anti-sex league): Sounds delicious! Will you send ...

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Kidding, it really does sounds delicious!
@christophrawr: I always get carded at R movies. I'm 28.
@kiddo: @sad potatoes: I am a huge Molly Ivins fan. Texas Monthly is just not the same without her. I was so sad by these comments that I talked to my parents and sisters about it. (I know, we're all adults but still grossly close.)

Here's what I meant to say: Bush was a terrible president. He was a less terrible, but still bad, governor. During his terms in Texas, my parents were more concerned with educational and tax issues, as we all went to public school. The education system improved and Bush showed an ability to reach across party lines to get things done, more than we can say for Asshat Perry. Along the way (while still governor) Bush fell to the right wing nutjobs - Fox News, Karl Rove, etc. So no, he wasn't good. Not at all. But for Texas? Better than Perry. I just wish he had the balls to have stuck with that stance instead of succumbing to extremism.
@BabyJane: @CurtCole: Jezebel's founding editor isn't a big fan of the shift key when commenting, either. I took it up with her once via email. I was frustrated that she and Tracie, as representatives of Jezebel, regularly commented without capitalization. I even cited her "Make friends with your shift key" language. Anna's response, to put it nicely, was "lighten up." I'm on your side: I advocate proper capitalization and grammar in all situations as a sign of respect. However, perhaps an ounce of leniency is in order on this one.

@LadyCoCo: AWESOME. What were you protesting?

I think my bowels loosened just thinking about this.
@Thus Spake Samādhi: Definitely true, and subsequently the lieutenant governor has more power than the governor. But the governor has increased power in the way Palin does - not really in a position to do anything but in a position to seriously influence the people who elect those that do.
@Swordfish: You're right, definitely not liberal on every issue. His abortion stance (and recent BS about a fetus in a jar, wtf) is reprehensible. But overall, for Texas? Pretty liberal.
@snugbug: I know, right? What a load of bullshit for me to be worrying about. When my ridiculous education failed me, my super-supportive family encouraged more education, waaaaaah.

But I'll still see your ante, and raise you an MA in art history AND touring with my boyfriend's band, not my own because mine was too shitty to tour and I had nothing better to do. Does it get any lamer than that? And worse, now I'm a broke loser that studies tax law and actually thinks, MAN, taxes are evil! Leave my (nonexistent) paycheck alone!

WTF. I NEED THOSE TAX DOLLARS TO FUND THIS STUPID EDUCATION. Hence the need for warm and fuzzy stories.

This isn't that surprising to me any more. I was shocked to hear my born-and-raised-in-Texas yet as-liberal-as-they-come parents say last Tuesday that they wished Bush had never been elected president because he was such a good governor.

According to them (it was a bit before my politically-aware time) Bush had a very liberal social policy and excelled at crossing partisan lines to get things done for the state. And then he was tainted as president by Rove and Cheney while Perry proceeded to make a mockery of Texas.

Given Laura's socially liberal stand on many issues in her memoir, it doesn't seem like a stretch that W. would feel the same way. Too bad neither of them had the guts to say it when he was in office.
@MSI, Captain Ethan: I say go for it! I've known several people that have met their spouses on a variety of online sites. At the very least, it's a learning experience. The one time I signed up, I realized I was really, really not ready to be back in a serious relationship. Might not be a big deal to some, but it was great for me because that revelation was a shock.

Just remember that no matter how big of a city you live in, someone on there probably knows you in some way. I live in a BIG city, but when my co-worker and I signed up together we were shocked at how many people one of us recognized, knew through a friend of a friend, etc. So if you are worried about that kind of thing, keep your picture private until you decide to show it, and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS tell a friend when you meet someone in person. Maybe I watch too many crime shows, but I would tell a guy before we met that my friends required his last name and number in case I disappeared, and then offer mine for him to pass along to his friends in case he disappeared, ha! Never had an objection.

Good luck!!!

@Eglantine Price: My undergraduate degree was in, of all useless things, music performance and sound recording. While I know I got all my musical talent from my mom, my passion for music came from my nearly tone-deaf dad. I think this story really sums up his love for music that he passed to me:

My dad is an oncologist, and one year was elected chief of staff at his primary hospital. One of his doctor buddies has a daughter that was deaf from birth and had decided to try cochlear implants (she was 12 at the time, about 15 years ago). Knowing that these surgeries aren’t always successful, my dad had one of this doctor’s nurses let him know when they found out if the surgery had worked. When he found out that it was a success and she was hearing well for the first time in her life, my dad had 500 CD envelopes printed with her address and postage. He passed them out to everyone at the hospital, asking them to buy their favorite album and drop it in the mail. She received over 300 CDs, and went on to double major in college, one of those majors being music theory.

My dad’s contribution? The Beatles, White Album. I love him so much.

I am one of those annoying people that went to college, got a useless masters, worked hard for a few years, was laid off, and am now in law school as a last resort. All the gawker stories about how I’m never going to get a job are hitting home. It’s probably the late night studying talking, but I want to hear some warm and fuzzy stories about your families. I’ll post one in the reply.

I fell victim to the double post curse. Move along, nothing to see here but my embarrassment.

@snugbug: Honestly, I was shocked at how sad I was when the rumors started flying around Dallas that the reason he's been out of the public eye is that he's had a pretty serious fall off the wagon. After seeing how awful he looked throwing out the first pitch for a World Series game, I was just sad for him. I still think he was a horrible president that fucked over our country, but I just can't take any pleasure in the sadness in his eyes these days.
@Groucho Marxism: Or he's fallen off the wagon, as the rumor mill in Dallas is suggesting...
I'm actually really proud of myself because I took time to compare all the candidates and their responses to questions posed by the local paper (most entertaining but least useful question: Have you ever been arrested?). For the first time, I didn't vote straight Democrat and ended up voting for Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians. There were actually some qualified, articulate GOP and Libs running in local elections that had level-headed platforms and voting records I could get behind, not alarmist DOWN WITH OBAMA bullshit.

Before you shoot me, I'd like to note that in my jurisdiction about 70% of the races are either uncontested GOP or just GOP and Libertarian. If the candidates were whackjobs, I abstained. Also, please don't tell my mother, or she'll probably try to ground me.
