OMG I hate read XOJane every day! I. CAN'T. STOP. There is so much privilege and narcissism and poor decision making masked as girl power on that site, I can't even deal. Except for Leslie Kinzel who is consistently rad to the degree that I feel kind of bad for her being associated with the rest of that dreck.
It makes me sad/angry/crazy. Even in the Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was a claymation movie, when they went out into the human world, even in the crowd scenes there was not a SINGLE person of color. Just like in this film! It's like Wes Anderson is incapable of imagining anyone other than white people. I love his films, but it's going to make me stop watching them eventually.
For realsies. No kids, but my partner and I are making $70,000 combined income this year and we eat out, buy things, have multiple gadgets and a car, travel, pay my medical bills from a year's worth of surgery and PT (I have insurance but it still adds up), donate to charity and still manage to save. I just do not understand what people spend money on. Admittedly, I live in Chicago, not NYC, but if we ever reach a point where each of us are earning $40k in stable income, I will feel rich as fuck.
Don't worry, yo is this racist has addressed the issue for us (brilliantly, as always):

Yo, first of all, to stave off the upcoming hate mail, I should say that Kim Jong Il was a bad guy, and no matter how dope his personal style was, he did mad evil shit.

But, and this goes for all the various foreign dictators, maniacs, and enemies of the West who have and will, be crowding the big, illegal Mercedes dealership in hell, chill with all the racial ridicule. Look, I know you’re crowing with bloodlust, and the kind of people who routinely cheer death need that bit of xenophobic racism to ensure that our enemies are firmly "other," but, to the extent that your minds are able, try not to be racist.

Yeah, everything that Leslie writes is BRILLIANT, and everything else is clueless, tone deaf, infuriating and/or offensive. I mostly read it to shout at it.
After I got into a bike crash, (having twisted open my ankle, torn through all of my ligaments, and sustained an injury that would require two surgeries and a year of recovery), I lay on the ground waiting for the ambulance apologizing for being such a pussy and probably making too big a deal out of nothing.
Except there's nothing in IRS law about using the word donation. You can make a non-tax deductible donation to anyone or any organization, and it's still a donation, you just can't deduct it on your taxes. Neither Paypal nor Regretsy was claiming these donations were tax deductible, just that they were donations, which they are. There's no legal reason why Paypal should have done this. They are just dicks.
Yeah that story is great. She also says something along the lines of "people describe the book as a book about being a teen, through the metaphor of war. It is actually a book about war, through the metaphor of war, featuring teens."
The plan was never to shut down the port of oakland during the day, it was to shut it down during the evening shift. While the longshoreman cannot simply declare a strike and walk off the job today, they can refuse to cross a community picket line during shift change today at 5pm. That's still the plan, as I understand it.
I'm reposting what has been posted down thread because I think this article really misframed what was in the flier. The full announcement had an unequivocal denunciation of sexual violence and assault, and provided info for women who wanted to go to the cops. but it ALSO provided alternative structures for folks who want to work outside of the legal system. Which is a lot of people: people who are undocumented, people who have been themselves victims of police violence, or people who are in a fucked up situation with someone they don't necessarily want to go to jail. Most sexual assault is perpetrated by someone close to the victim, and not wanting to have that person's life ruined, regardless of what a fucked up thing they've done, can be a big deterrent to reporting sexual assault. Read the whole statement before freaking out about how this is the WORST THING EVER!

Here is the pamphlet in full:

As the Security Committee of Occupy Baltimore, we release this statement to ensure the safety of our newly forming, delicate yet strong community.

Sexual abuse and assault are dehumanizing acts for the survivor as well as the abuser. It strips people of their right to safety, dignity, and respect. All of these basic values embody many of the intentions behind Occupy Baltimore. As a vibrant community, we recognize and give power to these values and the rights of survivors.

Sexual abuse or assault at Occupy Baltimore is in violation of our values, and will not be tolerated. It is an explicit policy of Occupy Baltimore to prohibit abuse by any member of the community upon another person. Violation of this policy will result in the abuser no longer being welcome at Occupy Baltimore.

Though we do not encourage the involvement of the police in our community, the survivor has every right and the support of Occupy Baltimore, to report the abuse to the appropriate law enforcement.

Reporting Procedure Any member of the Occupy Baltimore community who believes he/she/they have been the victim, or if you are aware of, or suspect sexual abuse taking place, are encouraged to immediately report the incident to the Security Committee.

Point person for dealing with these situations will be Koala Largess. ... Survivors of Sexual Abuse will be given the support, resources, and assistance needed for their emotional and physical health.

Anti-Retaliation

The Occupy Baltimore prohibits retaliation against any member, survivor, or outside person who reports in good faith a complaint of an abuser or who participates in any related inquiries. False accusations of sexual abuse in bad faith can have serious consequences for those who are wrongly accused.

Occupy Baltimore prohibits making false and/or malicious sexual abuse allegations, as well as providing false information during an inquiry. Anyone who violates any part of this policy will not be welcome at Occupy Baltimore.

Investigation and Follow-Up

Occupy Baltimore's Security Committee will make every reasonable effort to keep the matters involved in the allegation as confidential as possible while still allowing for a prompt and thorough inquiry. All allegations of abuse will be treated seriously and will be promptly and thoroughly investigated.

If the survivor wishes to involve law enforcement, in order to obtain physical evidence of the assault, you must report the incident immediately within 72 hours of the assault as collection and preservation of evidence is critical.

Occupy Baltimore will also work to supply the abuser with counseling resources to deal with their issues. The Occupy Baltimore Community has a Zero-Tolerance policy for any sexual physical or mental abuse of or by a community member or other person."
I mean, to her credit, Ratzinger really was a Nazi. I mean, not in that "mad at your parents so you call them Nazis" way, but in the "served in the military in Nazi Germany and manned anti-aircraft guns outside of a concentration camp" way.
While any number of horrifying accounts have come out of Libya, and I'm sure that there are more to come, the accounts of mass rape, and the work of this psychiatrist in particular, have been called into question by human rights organizations:[www.independent.co.uk]
One of the people killed when the stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair was an amazing Latina queer activist from Chicago. Her fiancee is in critical condition. I know gawker covered the accident, but it would be nice to do a follow up on Christina Santiago and her legacy. #tips
No, actually this comment implies that the NY Post based a full page cover story on unsubstantiated innuendo from someone close to the defense. And I think that Jezebel has an obligation to mention that somewhere in their post, instead of just repeating those claims in their headline and in their article. I don't think it's relevant whether or not a rape victim has been engaged in sex work. But I do think it's relevant to point out that the defense is attacking her by making that allegation, and not just echo it without critique or analysis.
Really Jezebel? WTF! I can't believe you ran with that headline. Even Gawker did a better job of exposing the NYPost story as a baseless smear job. But you help them out by repeating their accusations in your headline, without context or analysis. With feminist websites like this, who needs douchebag newspapers like the Post?
I'm so proud of Michelle for coming out as the first gay, clown serial killer to run for president! She may not make it, but she's broken the glass ceiling for all of us who will follow in her footsteps.
Funny you should mention it. Los Zetas were trained and armed by the CIA to fight guerrillas in Central America in the 1980s. When the civil wars ended, they had a lot of arms and a lot of training and needed to find a new way to make money. So yeah, thanks for your suggestion, but I think the CIA has done enough to help already.
All of the speculation about her political future makes me crazy! Having known and loved people with brain injuries, even minor ones have serious long-term consequences. To imagine that one year after being shot through the brain someone would be ready to govern is totally unrealistic. We should just be happy that she is alive and making progress.
This is exactly something that relates to Reel Grrls. They are a media justice organization. They did a whole year long program about media monopolies and corporate media. I think they handled this perfectly: they took corporate funding when it benefited them, didn't let it affect their political views or advocacy work, and had a plan to deal with that funding when it got yanked.
