Sadly, the bill that passed in the senate was a stripped down version of an even more horrible bill, which required doctors to tell more lies to their patients, namely that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer. [www.msnbc.msn.com]

I know far-right crazies have taken over our state when Mitch Daniels has started to look okay. Our state doesn't exactly have a lot of money, so I'm hoping against hope that losing those $4 million will be enough to cause the house to alter this bill.

Jon Kyl and Mike Pence have been colluding to price-fix Matzoh. #NotIntendedToBeAFactualStateme...

I've been trying to add Mike Pence into the mix but so far it's just me. (Though if you search his name, I've clogged it up pretty good.)
You are definitely not crazy. I recall that in Japan, most of the "Don't get caught in the closing doors" - type messages were voiced by a woman.

I was just getting on her to comment that different cultures have different ideas of what the 'ideal' voice should be. While gender issues are certainly one factor in why these voices are used, it has a lot to do with convention as well. Americans like the deep male announcer voice because that's what they're used to, but that's not always the case in other countries, like Japan, where a very calm, higher-pitched female voice is usually the standard.
I was just thinking that I (a woman) would totally wear an "I like girls that love Jesus" shirt for the lolz if they made it.
An Indiana teen is told by school officials that her performance of the national anthem (which was a fairly standard soul rendition) is disrespectful to the troops and she needs to tone it down.

@NeoFlyGirL: I like it okay. There are some pretty cool people, but you also have to be wary of the gems like the above guy.

I have met up with someone, and while I don't think I'll see him again, since we don't have that much in common, it was definitely a good experience. You should ask your guy for coffee! It sure is nerve-wracking, but people are on that site for a reason, so your chances of getting a yes are pretty good.

@The_Psycho_Linguist:
It is so hard to watch students with talent fail to live up to it.

Does your school have a counseling office? If you can convince her to talk to them, sometimes they can help arrange things with an instructor to allow them to turn in things late, or make other arrangements. It sounds like she may have some things that she needs to work out with a counselor anyway, and this way you wouldn't be giving her special treatment.

I just got a message on OKCupid with the subject line "Super Serious Question" and the body was "Is there a penis?"

A friend suggested replying with "Look behind you." I kind of want to, just to see what happens, but I also don't want to encourage this weirdo.

Remember that year it was "You", with a mirror on the cover? That's a level of phoning it in that will never be topped. Comparatively, Zuckerberg seems like a well-thought-out, finger-on-the-pulse-of-the-nation choice.
I got someone who tried the same line on me twice. Within a week. Something about me being crazy hot.

I was really tempted to write back "I'm not one to tell people how to do their jobs, but you could certainly be more convincing that your profile is not a fake" but I decided that it would only encourage this person.
I haven't commented on Jezebel in forever, but now I'm working on some final papers and I can't help myself. Any other procrastinating grad students hanging out here today?

Someone needs to take the internet away from me.

@chocolatstiletto: I have a friend who got an OKCupid message exactly like this. ("There should be a support group," she says.) It was an extremely memorable message. Something about swiss cheese being the best cheese because it reminded him of his childhood conception of cheese? I would imagine it's the same guy terrorizing a variety of Seven Sister students, but there's always the terrifying possibility of multiple swiss cheese guys.
I was an 80's hair metal rocker.
I couldn't find a picture, but in addition to the dragon on my arm, I had a temporary tatoo of a heart and the name "Kimberly", misspelled.
@Piegasm: I, too, had to go to the hospital because of what turned out to be a UTI that had spread to another part of my body. It was the middle of the night and I felt like I was dying, and my boyfriend at the time ended up calling campus emergency services. That whole night was a combination of terrifying and embarrassing, but I definitely learned from that experience to take UTIs seriously.
@Etoiles: I find the photoshopping in those ads absolutely terrifying. It looks like Lancome has transformed her from a perfectly lovely actress into some sort of human-lizard hybrid.
@Devonna: Agreed.

I was really impressed by the line at the end: "We erred and we’re sorry – not because of your response, but because we were wrong and would’ve been wrong even if nobody had said so."
@atchka: Wow. These comments are much more hateful than just "Crocs make you look like a dumbass" or other style-bashing groups. They're pretty clearly misogynistic. I, too, oppose censorship, but if Facebook is taking down groups that target certain groups -like say, women - then they really should be taking groups like this this too.

Shannon, I really appreciated reading about your reverse-trolling adventures. I don't know if it did any good changing the minds of these ignorant people, but it's certainly an interesting social experiment if nothing else.
WOOOOOOOOO VASSAR!!! Can't believe it's been a year since I stood there.
After the last thing that came out of IU today's front page story on the Indiana Daily Student is a positive change. (And when I say front page, I mean, it's really front page - it extends above and below the fold.) It's one woman's extremely upsetting story about how the system, not just the university, but the hospital and police too, failed her and other victims of sexual assault, and it's definitely worth the read. Your mom mentioned something I was wondering about Maya's departure. I'm glad to have Anthony back, but Maya just leaving like that was strange. But if the producers would push her off to get back Anthony, why would they have auf'ed him in the first place? Hmmm.
