I have not heard of this before, but go BU for doing the right thing.
BC Sucks.

Sorry. It's just reflex.
Maybe we should make a case for plagiarism in fashion since people can't fathom that the designers who create the patterns on the fabric deserve the same protection as any other artist.
As a B&N bookselller I laugh at articles quoting "customers" lamenting that their favorite place to kill time/read magazines/hang out basically and do anything besides buy the merchandise that there to buy is closing.
The thing about fairy tale weddings is that they're the ending of the fairy tale (originally told at a time when the only way women could acquire security was through an advantageous marriage). Before you get to the wedding you have to be nice to the old beggar woman, help the eagle, remember which of the witch's son's you shouldn't trust, not get eaten by the wolf, trick the witch, have the good son show you the way out of the castle, find the eagle to cross the cliff and make it back home alive. And sometimes all you're rewarded with isn't marriage to a prince but spitting out rubies and roses every time you talk.
I don't really care about the side streets because, well, they're side streets. I'd rather the city enforce people shoveling sidewalks and getting the Q trains back to its normal service than worrying about whether or not my inconsequential street is plowed anytime soon. But Bloomberg's tone-deaf response of telling the city that everything is going well when plows, buses, ambulances and subways are stuck because of snow after the storm shows a lack of concern for the residents of this city.
There should be an orange at the bottom of the stocking. Anything else is whatever, although in my family it is a gift-card for make-up, candy, a bottle of soda, other small gifty items, and always a toothbrush. The non-negotiables here are a toothbrush and an orange.
@willwriteforfood: I work retail and feel the same way. Love my job, love what I'm selling but my co-workers? Their misery and cattiness makes the job not worth it.
@Seven06Renault: Well not only does it expand the places where extraterrestrial life can exist, it also changes our basic understanding and assumptions of the building blocks of life and our planet and what is possible. It's comparable to when we first split the atom and found out that atoms are made up of smaller particles.
I'm just sad that this was started the year after I graduated from college, and that Harvard won.

(But at least it wasn't BC!)
I do not wear trousers, but for that plaid in number 6 I would make an exception. I have a crush on tartan and tweeds.
@seattlesue: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! That is the second worst thing you can do because it just drive the bedbugs further into the walls and crevices and makes the infestation worse!
@Lavinia: My future roommates need to be aware that one of my goals in life is to own either a Norwegian Forest Cat or a Maine Coon because they're so pretty. Or one of each.
@CassandraSays: To maybe answer your question about why there aren't more period dramas based upon American Literature: There aren't as many classic American books that deal with same faintly romantic (and classed based) subject matter as English novels from the same period. When Cranford was published we had just gotten over the Civil War. The audience for Huck Finn and Moby Dick is going to be different than the audience for Vanity Fair.

I also think that it's because no one has shown that it can be profitable here. From what I gather, Britain has a culture of watching one-off shows and series. (At least that's what I gather from the Doctor Who Christmas episode tradition) And your made for tv movies are good. Which means that there are more producers willing to make another Jane Austen adaption because they know that there's an audience for it.

Most of the dramas citied are imported from England -- a number are televised in the States are part of Masterpiece, and produced by PBS (actually WGBH), which is a not-for-profit television station. Ratings aren't an issue for PBS stations in the same way that they are for CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox because most of their funding comes from donations. However, they aren't going to be able to fund the production of a costume drama without major backing (fyi --there was an American version of Masterpiece which ran for three years).
@misslexington: Possibly because of blogs like one which delight in mocking a teenager for acting like a teenager? It would make me a little defensive and angsty to perceive that a lot of people don't like me.
@scouts honor: But if you walk without rhythm you won't attract the worm.
