I was watching an episode from 2001 ish and this man was suing his ex fiance for the engagement ring back and what not and the woman says "oh no it was a gift a long with the bracelet he's a jack ass blah blah blah" counter suit etc. ANYWAY the man had proof he bought the ring in august and she was saying he didn't give it to her until december and JJ said "that would never happen, men don't have the attention span to hold onto a ring for that long." major LOLZ

filthygorgeous commented on Midwife Nurses In Mozambique Fight Maternal Mortality @gerbilsoutofexile (loves a good muumuu): "Maybe I'm wrong, but the incidence of abuse on military bases is much higher than in the regular sector." I wouldn't be too surprised.

what's really interesting is I've read about a lot of domestic abuse on Native American reservations, and the excuses there follow the lines of men being emasculated, losing land, losing culture, etc. This leads to alcohol, substance, and domestic abuse. What would the reasonings be in the military? Meaning, what would the sociological or mental or emotional causes for the military to have a higher percentage of abuse?

But is it easy for a woman in these countries to order it online? Like money wise?

filthygorgeous commented on Did Your Parents' Pop Culture Turn You Into A Feminist? @stoprobbers: I love old musicals too. This is one of my favorite scenes in the whole film and I loved when they revived it on broadway that they kept the mirror part because that's what I adore.

However, just because I like it doesn't mean I agree with it or try to emulate it. I do think part of my feminism came from my parents inability to censor anything for me. I was 4 years old running around, singing, and dancing to the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Which I think was the jump start for me into the "personal is political" feminism.

Actually, one of my favorite things now with Disney is to laugh at some of the lyrics in their 1960s films. Like "femininity" from summer magic is hilarious because it's telling you how you need to "laugh but not loudly--ha ha-- if he should chose to tell a joke" and "femininity, femininity, hide the real you." It's just too funny. Also has anyone noticed the magnificent lyric in "Sister Sufragette" from Mary Poppins where she says "though we adore men individually/we agree that as a group/they're rather stupid." Brilliant!

filthygorgeous commented on Selma Blair: Under Blouse Arrest I don't like that. Is she getting ready for kath and kim?

@Your_Screenplay_Sucks: have you seen the original kath and kim? they're played by two women of the same age. And kim (the daughter) is supposed to be in the early 20s. It started as a skit on a sketch show in australia and the humor comes from kim not being as young as she a) is supposed to be or b) as she dresses/acts. Needless to say, the American Kath and Kim is a HORRIBLE idea! It's like when they took coupling into America. It won't work. The humor comes from their tacky Australian accents and life. It just won't translate at all.

Look at moieeeeee please kim! I've got one thing to say to you. BAD

@ramalamadingdong: I thought Vanity Fair was a gorgeous film. Not a good film, but beautiful to look at. The costumes, the hair, the scenery. All of it was just beautiful, though a bit gratuitous--for example the exotic dance she performs was such an anachronism, yet I came out wanting all of the costumes used in the film.

@ms.tyrant: It's depressing, but as a woman in the Arts I find it pathetic that women give up so easily. Yeah I have a battle ahead of me, but fuck it. I ain't down yet.

filthygorgeous commented on Boy Anorexic Sheds Light On Girl Anorexics @Archetype: I know there isn't much in common between the two, except for their media exposure. Scott Weiland, while Doherty's American counterpart, doesn't receive the same attention in the US that Doherty does in the UK.

filthygorgeous commented on Boy Anorexic Sheds Light On Girl Anorexics You know, the BBC does some really interesting documentaries. I missed this one. It must have been before I got tv.

I've seen some pretty scarily thin boys and men over here in the UK, and I understand that most would argue it's the whole "Americans are fat and lazy" stereotype but I wonder if Anorexia in males is more common in the UK vs the US. And if it has to do with the celebrities that the media focuses on? For example, I would say Pete Doherty is a lot thinner than say Brad Pitt or most male celebrities in America, and less inclined to keep his weight through exercise. And if we're saying it's due to societal pressures, then I would hope the fact that american film stars are gym junkies vs actual junkies might affect the male psyche differently.

Just some food for thought.

filthygorgeous commented on "I wish that the numbers were @Macloserboy: I'm assuming we've moved on to something's gotta give. I personally didn't like that film at all. However, its hard to say who's choice it was. As I mentioned with Boys Don't Cry, Pierce had slightly different plans but had to Hollywood-ize it. The studio does have quite a bit to say about many films. Take Legend or King Arthur (or whatever it was called with clive Owen and kira knightley) or even A Touch of Evil. Director's cuts of films exist because studios ultimately have more control than the directors. Also, it could have been her choice because society has only recently allowed for "cougars" to exist in the mainstream. And don't even get me started on the whole terminology of "cougars."

But, think back how many films do you know where the woman ends up happy with a younger man? I'm thinking of Harold and Maude but that doesn't have a happy ending.

Also, think of all the female directors out there and then think of how many create critically acclaimed films. There have been only two women nominated for an Academy Award in Directing. Most female directors have to do "fluff" romantic comedies or teen flicks. Very few actually make it to the same level as the male directors do.

filthygorgeous commented on "I wish that the numbers were @Macloserboy: thanks. I didn't think it was that bad. Not great, but for an airplane movie and a movie that was not widely released I thought it was much better than a lot of the shit many male directors release. Personally, I liked it better than most of Nancy Meyers' work and better than Heckerling's look who's talking.

But I also think the lack of publicity around it says a lot about the subject matter as well. That middle aged women don't exist in Hollywood. Like Diane Keaton in Meyers' something's gotta give is ultimately not allowed to have a relationship with Keanu reeves but you constantly find middle aged men with 20 something attractive women.

filthygorgeous commented on MagHag It's the bags under her eyes. I mean of all the things they retouch or hide, that makes her look 15 years older. It's just a bad angle and lighting.

filthygorgeous commented on "I wish that the numbers were @veryrestricted: Cheryl Dunye.

filthygorgeous clipped "I wish that the numbers were filthygorgeous commented on "I wish that the numbers were One of my film professors is friends with her and we had a discussion in class about how Hollywood still made her water down a lot of her vision for Boys Dont Cry. For example, you always knew it was "Hilary Swank" playing a woman who wanted to be a man and even though you should refer to Brandon Teena as he, so few people get that it's Hollywood making it clear that Brandon Teena was still a "she."

it's really disgusting how few women are out there and if you ask someone to name a female director you get Sofia Copola who you have to admit has a family and last name that helped her get into the business. Or Nancy Meyers who has a few okay films but gets trapped in the romantic comedy. Or amy heckerling who's "I could Never Be Your Woman" with Michelle Phiefer was totally ignored (I saw it on a plane and it was pretty damn good. Not clueless or Fast times but still very good and I think very honest

Anyway, off my soap box.

I would like to see said dress prior to the malfunction (is it one of the two in the pic?) and the price tag for it. I agree that most wedding businesses are over priced, but still... if she's claiming mental or emotional damages or what not (I'm not sure what they're considering under 'moral damages') I want to see a receipt for all of it... and did she say her vows and run home? Or did the party carry on?
