I would also argue that braces typically are not just for cosmetic correction. Misaligned teeth mean a misaligned bite, which results in additional wear and tear on the teeth and jaw.
It is my firm belief that how an individual chooses to form her (or his) family is a matter of personal choice and is not something that the rest of us should be sitting around judging. Those who have adopted know that the processes are very different and, while domestic adoption works best for many adoptive parents, international adoption works best for many others. People choose domestic vs. international adoption for a variety of reasons and unless you have walked in their shoes, it's presumptuous to assume that it's because of fear of "crack babies" (a phrase I loathe, by the way) or anything else.
Shape magazine is apologizing to its readers for putting LeAnn Rimes on its cover because she is a husband-stealer. Needless to say, no discussion in their apology of said husband.
Subject: To my dear Shape readers
You are all in good company (why I'm e-mailing you all together) as you all agree Shape has made a terrible mistake in putting LeAnn Rimes on the cover.
Please know that our putting her on the cover was not meant to put a husband-stealer on a pedestal-but to show (through her story) how we all are human. And this woman in particular found strength in exercise in what she said was her most difficult personal moment.
But it did not come across that way ... And for that I'm terribly sorry.
I hope that we can do better the next time for those of you that will give us another chance.
@thelittlepotato: Foster care is temporary, at least in theory. I think what PinkSoxHat (and she can correct me if I'm wrong) is getting at is that if it were easier for gay individuals to adopt, more children would be in permanent homes rather than temporary foster homes.
@Ofmyself: I've done it and it's not bad. Just don't take it personally when people are rude or hang up on you or whatever. After you make a few calls, you'll get the hang of it and you'll be fine.
@The captain of my heart: You're pretty much right on schedule. :) Seriously, the worry, the freaking out, the nausea -- we've all been there. Allow yourself a few minutes of freak out here and there and then just remind yourself that it's a stupid endurance test and you just have to focus and kill it dead.
Hang in there. It's a shitty rite of passage and it should be done away with, but it hasn't been, and you, too, shall pass.
I'll see your Milky the Marvelous Milkin' Cow and raise you one My Puppy Puddles. Honestly, it's a toy that did nothing but drink and pee. Plus, the jingle rhymes "water" and "ought to" (in the form of "oughta") which should be a criminal offense
I love the First Amendment and all, but I'm about ready to advocate extending the Son of Sam laws to include anything having to do with this scandal and the idiots involved in it.
@laurasaurus: I don't know that I would bother with the kamikaze. Frankly, it wouldn't make a positive difference anyway.
I've found that there is almost nothing on the main page that I'm interested in recently, which sucks. Back in the day, I clicked on most articles, even the ones that didn't seem up my alley, so that I could see what discussions are going on. Now I'm being stingy with my page views. I realize my one little page view isn't going to matter a hill of beans, but at least I feel like I'm not contributing to the problem.
As we're always told, it's Gawker Media's site and we don't have to read it if we don't want to. So, I'm exercising my option not to read an awful lot of stuff.
I have mostly lurked in Groupthink but I expect to be spending a lot more time here.
@TimFritz: I read one of that series last summer but I can't remember which one. Two of my friends raved about them so I tried one. I was, to say the least, underwhelmed and have no desire to read any more of them. I can't say I hated it, because I couldn't even work up that much emotion over it.
@lalie (apologetic mess): Speaking both as someone who has had my identity stolen and as an attorney who deals with this all the time, I'd strongly recommend reporting it. It really doesn't take much time and having that police report (and the ID theft affidavit from the FTC website) will make her life much easier if she finds out that someone used her ID to open credit cards, etc., somewhere down the line.
