"I assumed another reason for not showing the continents during the landing on earth: earth is so royally boned that the destruction is visible from space (presumably the view is altered enough that us earthlings would notice a difference, even if the BSG crew wouldn't), and to show it in that shot would have ruined the surprise. Also I think that the ruins are clearly meant to be the view of Manhattan from Brooklyn; everything from the tiny island (Liberty Island) to the left of the long one (Manhattan) says that that was the impression they were trying to create."

I thought that the basestar and Galactica wouldn't be able to communicate under the best of circumstances due to Galactica's old school networking. I also wasn't clear that the basestar's comms were definitely broken, it just seemed more like the humans were naturally scrambling to try SOMETHING that would keep them from being blown into itty bitty pieces. None of this is that important anyway."
