Those complaining about the lack of ethnic diversity of the women pictured might want to look at the demographics of Germany - people of Iranian, Pakistani and especially Turkish origin make up the majority of minority groups, (as well as people from other European countries). [en.wikipedia.org]
If you think everyone there is of German origin, you're not looking hard enough!
@leftoverhill: The TV series is just called Mapp and Lucia and the books came to be known as that also: [en.wikipedia.org]
I've had a quick look youtube and it doesn't look like there are any full episodes up there - so I guess you would have to get hold of the DVDs somehow, to watch them. (They're repeated on UK digital channels at unsociable hours.)
I found a fan montage though - it's camper than a row of tents!
For epic bitchery, I love the 1980s adaption of E.F. Benson's Mapp and Lucia novels (written in the 1920s and 30s), with Geraldine McEwan, Prunella Scales and Nigel Hawthorne. The sets are dreadful, the costumes lovely, the minutiae of genteel middle-class social competition painfully good. The hats inspire lust.
Deeply trivial observation: One of the false notes for me in Mad Men is the name Lane Pryce - a biblical/monarch name would be far more convincing. Although the son called Nigel is perfect for a child of that generation.
@TopLevelExecutive: I hated that we found out nothing about her - Lane could have easily turned up at her apartment, rather than the club for that conversation so we could have got a smidge of context/backstory, but no. Well, if she's in it for a couple more eps, maybe the character will be rounded out a little more.
@dissolved.girl: Absolutely! It's great for all-round intellectual development in young people, as well as creative expression and driving your parents crazy with scratchy renditions of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
@peenerbambina: Nice! This year's best find for me was a gorgeous, black pencil skirt for £6 - thick cotton-jersey, goes with everything, fits every day of the month. (I bought two.)
I haven't ventured into Topshop for a long time...
@peenerbambina: Evans - 90% dreary, and I have heard bad things about their management.
I choose (am forced to choose) H&M, M&S, Peacocks, the odd bit of vintage, the odd bit of LKBennett (when they run large and I'm feeling flush), and whatever I can find in TKMaxx.
@ohblahdee: I started going to dance classes in June (with a fellow Jezebelle in fact) - it's great exercise, but more than that, it's creative and terribly absorbing (and thus relaxing).
This is a great project and reminds me of a letter that Savage Love printed a few years ago, from a teenager, who was being bullied for being gay - which Dan printed some of the responses to, including one which began 'Three important words: High school ends' and ended 'And [when you're an adult] you'll have the confidence to sign a letter like this with your real name' and then his full name. Very moving.
