I'm Canadian, born and raised, and I never, ever, have heard this kind of analysis applied to schools here? But then I didn't go to a Southern Ontario private school, so maybe I just frequent the "wrong" circles...
I think you have to separate out "America" from "individual Americans" here. I don't think "America" has much standing to tell anyone how to run a fair justice system, or at least, it has far less standing than it imagines itself to have. The death penalty, overcrowding of prisons, Guantanamo, you name it, the system is rife with injustice. This is why no one cares to listen to "America" opine on the subject, these days.
Individual Americans, however, don't necessarily need to care about any of that, assuming that they do themselves agitate against the various injustices in their own system. Again, I suspect that number of consistent objectors is far smaller than the number of Americans who are complaining about Iran. But I don't think you can adequately criticize the rule, no, from a standpoint of acquiescence to U.S. penal policy choices.
So I'm back for the first time in like a month and really reading the comments and I don't see anyone I know, basically, until I head in here. What gives, Jezebels? Why are we hiding?
I feel like this is such a Montréal thing. Particularly the race part, though the no-fatties thing does not exactly surprise me. Montréal clubland is really dedicated to a certain "look" in its patrons.
That said I figured this was on Crescent, but just looked it up and it's at St-Laurent and Des Pins. Which, umm, okay, apparently that area has changed a LOT in the five years since I last lived there.
I love this show so much. Its not that it doesn't have flaws, but I feel like the politics and the mission and even about 75% of the time the execution is spot-on. I wish it was making the kind of noise Glee did. I feel like Glee got credit for all its "progressivism" but it's about as subtle and skillful as a hammer, whereas this show is frickin' Puccini opera by comparison.
My working hypothesis is that the Swiss couldn't use Polanski to bargain for leniency from the IRS/SEC as hoped, saw a technical way to deny extradition, and just took it.
