@Nick Denton: "Jezebel is only really powerful when it preaches to the unconverted. "
In what way is parroting casual racism, ableism, and sexism (the Paris post, for example) preaching to the unconverted? I think I would have more respect for you if you just said "Jezebel is no longer interested in providing alternative content to mainstream 'women's interest' news sources. We want casual readers to not be afraid of being challenged by our content. We hope long time readers and commenters stay here out of habit, but they don't really matter in terms of numbers."
The reason people are bringing up their anger over the direction of the site is that many people think the slow and underwhelming response to this is a reflection of you and your company's feelings towards the commenters in general. People who trusted your company and gave their time and effort to contribute to the content of your site have been, at the absolute least, extremely inconvenienced. Some have had personal information hacked. Those who are no longer active members of the community but who had personal information on this site at one time, meanwhile, have not been contacted by your company to inform them of the problems, and so they may have problems in the future as a result of this. That is, frankly, unacceptable, as is your lax attitude towards your "annual check-up." This wasn't just about your information or systems. You didn't just miss your annual check-up. You ignored symptoms of your illness and then forgot to tell people you coughed on their food until they were sick too.
@jennybean79: A couple of things. First, telling people to simmer, relax, and that they are ridiculous is not really conducive to a friendly disagreement. It is a silencing technique. It basically says, "your opinion is silly so quit sharing it." Also, though you have every right to express your opinion about this, other people have the right to call you out on it, and it doesn't make them ridiculous. If your intention was to say that you personally wouldn't feel sexy pole dancing while pregnant, your language choice was unclear, because how I read your comment was "it is gross (sleazy) for you to feel sexy pole dancing while pregnant. That was not a personal experience or personal opinion about your own preferences, it was a comment on what is or is not appropriate for everyone, and if you want to share that opinion, you need to be prepared for people to disagree with you.
@notsodarling: @bobella is owltastic!: SO MANY important things to say about Harry Potter! It was on ABC Family ALL DAY TODAY! I have quotes to reblog! I HAVE MEMES THAT NEED TO BE ATTENDED TO.
Weekend Jez was where I first started to feel comfortable as a commenter here. Thank you so much, hortense, for all of your hard work to make weekend jez fun and interesting. Enjoy your time with your friends and family! May you soon forget what disemvowel even means!
I don't give a shit if she's a virgin or if she personally masturbates. Not everyone has the same sexual urges or desires and plenty of people have personal reasons for not having sex that have nothing to do with being repressed jerks. My concern with Christine O'Donnell is that she is attempting to force everyone to make the same sexual choices she has made. Poking fun at her alleged virginity just confuses the point and gives people an excuse to say the attacks on her are personal.
Super late to the party, but thank you Anna, for you stewardship of this site. I will miss your writing and your editorial hand. Thank you for creating a space that allowed us to often approach pop culture and news alike from a feminist perspective. Seriously, it meant a lot.
@SomeAuthorGirl: "Some members of the committee have some concerns over her haircut, said a high ranking aid. Many fear that this haircut, in combination with her lack of penis, could lead to her make questionable decisions about gun control. 'We take our responsibility very seriously to ensure that nominees will not allow any personal experiences or identities that conflict with our own--the "correct" experiences and identities.' The minority leader's office insisted the nominee would be judged by her qualifications, but had no further comment."
Well, if I'm reading this graph correctly... 1999 was a World Cup year and 2004 was a Summer Olympics year. Which is not to excuse the crappiness of the results, just to say I don't think the decline was quite so steady. My guess would be there was a significant drop after the 2000 Olympics and a spike in 2008. I'm definitely bummed-- though not particularly surprised-- at how far it's plunged this year. Women's professional leagues in the US get little to no coverage, and so it seems like women's sports are usually only covered when they're related to international competitions.
Guttenberg! Finally making a non-Rob Thomas (the TV producer and writer, creator of Veronica Mars and co-creator of Party Down not the lead singer from Matchbox 20) comeback!
@wtfox?!: This is true. Going, say, to a local DA could be seen as the angry internet celebrity equivalent of writing a strongly worded letter and then chickening out before sending it.
If Scott Baio taught us anything, it's that the best way to get back at someone is to report them to the Justice Department for being mean and then call them all shitass lesbians on twitter or facebook. It is the best way to communicate your seriousness of purpose.
