What is sad is that it seems Sky had political reasons for sacking Gray: he had just launched legal proceedings against News International, also owned by Rupert Murdoch, so it seems that someone at Sky was desperate to get rid of him. I rejoice to him go, with his ignorance and cliches, but note that Richard Keys is merely suspended. Hmm..
@td7652: What, you mean that it is not true that they are just saying what every man thinks? and that reverse sexism is just as rife? I might have to have a lie down
@CharmeleonWithAttitude: Right on. The irony is that the vast majority of pundits and commentators, at least here in the UK, don't really know the rules at all, and just recycle lazy old cliches - such as the 'interfering with play' question. And I believe it was Andy Gray who had to be told last week who the AC Milan manager is. Perhaps it was his time of the month?
I think this piece would have needed to have been a lot funnier to have a point. Am I the only person who likes Jennifer Aniston? Come on, The Switch, Friends, The Good Girl?
@rbaech: I think there's a difference between snarking, asking pointed questions and derailing. Your point about dummies is extremely well taken though!
@wonderwoahman: I caught your point beautifully: it involves you knowing better than members of marginalized groups how they should feel about offensive language. You made it crystal clear. But whatever, continue to talk about coffee jargon.
@wonderwoahman: Your words exactly: 'Did you bring up with him that though calling someone "retarded" does and can have an offensive meaning, that they way the people in the grocery store was using it, was in a different context?' You are saying that the person with Down's syndrome was incorrect to chastise those people, because they were using the word in a different context despite HIM feeling upset by its casual use as a synonym for stupid or messed-up. I don't think I've misunderstood your point remotely. You don't seem to understand that YOU don't determine the meaning of words, that their users and receivers also determine them. But whatever, enjoy your privilege.
@wonderwoahman: So now you are explaining (able-splaining?) that the commenter's disabled brother was misguided in chastising those people because you know better? Holy fuck, now I've heard it all.
@BioLady: If you read the exchanges she and her sister started a flame war against someone who made some mild comments about her mother's show, using hate speech. Safe to say that those Palin gals have some anger issues.
@BioLady: Think about the recent spate of suicides by gay teens, who have to endure this kind of hate speech all the time. Some of them were only sixteen. Or fifteen. Or fourteen.
@gherkinfiend: Yes, I was amused when a few years ago their horrible friends allegedly were making fun of her because her mother was a former air stewardess (calling her 'doors to manual' apparently, because working for a living is so common). Where I come from, a millionaire lifestyle and a fuck-off house spells posh.
@T-RO: This is not strictly true. Yes, B is a clever and populist politician, with a knack for the common touch. But there are endless polemics in Italy about his promotion of women, many of them unqualified for the cabinet posts they hold. Now I find a lot of the criticism around that quite sexist, and these female politicians are often conflated with the showgirls and prostitutes of the Berlusconi scandals, which is quite problematic.
@shak_diesel: There are lots of Italians who vehemently oppose Berlusconi, so it should be easy to find like-minded folk. In fact, the favourite pursuit of left-wing or liberal Italians is to bemoan Berlusconi and all his doings. See Beppe Grillo's blog for some of that: [www.beppegrillo.it]
