China Decides to Stops Giving Orphans the Last Names 'State' and 'Party'

China has issued a new rule that will make life easier for the tens of thousands of children that grow up in its orphanages. Up until now, it was common practice for orphanages to give their children surnames either based on the place that they were abandoned or to give them generic names like "Guo" or "Dang," which indicated the were of the "State" or "Party." These names made it easy for people to guess they were orphans—which could lead to a life of feeling marginalized. A child welfare worker told the state newspaper China Daily, "We don't want children who grow up in orphanages to carry labels that imply they are different from those who have parents." Now, the new naming practice will be to choose from a list of the 100 most common Chinese surnames. It's nice that at least future orphans won't have to worry about being stigmatized when they grow up—because on paper they'll be just like every other Zhào, Chén, and Yáng. More »

Yes, it certainly feels as though Beyoncé is releasing new music videos at the speed of light, but those who have been waiting for the one track most likely to be her hit single can rest easy, for "Party" is here. The music video is exactly what the song implies, a party — but it takes place in a trailer park (where there's plenty of room for her to park her $500,000 minivan). The beat is good, Beyoncé looks fabulous, we've got B's sister Solange playing the role of D.J., and former Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland in the crowd. Yet Andre 3000 — who figures into the original track — has been replaced by J Cole in the video. Maybe Andre just wasn't that into the trailer park idea, or he's distancing himself from whatever the hell Beyoncé's word "swagu" really means. More »

So, Fashion Week is on. And last night I went to my first Fashion Week party. And it was kind of the worst experience ever. Talking about the election has become a fun sort of foreplay for spring breaking college students in primary states! A story in today's Wall Street Journal follows an Obama volunteer and Virginia jazz studies major on his Spring Break "springternship" to Philadelphia. (The Obama campaign is the only one with a formal "Springtern" program.) (Side note: Jazz studies...Hopeful? Or audacious?)
