Oscar Pistorius to Be Released From Prison After Serving Ten Whole Months

Oscar Pistorius, the runner convicted of shooting girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, is set to be released from prison Friday after serving ten months of a five year sentence. He will serve a portion of the rest of his sentence on house arrest, wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide—manslaughter—for shooting Steenkamp through the bathroom door of their home. At trial, he claimed he believed she was an intruder. According to CNN, early release is common in South Africa due to overcrowding and lack of funding. He’ll carry out the remainder of his sentence at his uncle’s massive mansion in Waterkloof, a wealthy suburb of Pretoria.

Pistorius does, however, face a potential resentencing in November; the prosecution won the right to appeal the culpable homicide conviction and attempt again to have him convicted of murder. The International Paralympic Committee has said that he can’t race again until his five-year sentence is fully completed.

Update, 4:15: A spokesperson told South Africa’s News 24 that actually Pistorius won’t be required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.
