Four Marines have been court-martialed for their participation in the rape of a Japanese girl. These servicemen are not to be confused with Tyrone Hadnott, the Marine accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Okinawa. These Marines are being punished for an entirely different rape that took place last year in Hiroshima. (They allegedly gang raped a 19-year-old in a car shortly after meeting her in an event hall.) During a state visit to Japan yesterday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice apologized to Japanese officials over the alleged rape of a 14-year-old Okinawa girl by a U.S. Marine. "We certainly hope that there will not be lasting effects; [our friendship with Japan is] a longstanding and strong alliance," Rice said. "Our concern right now is to see that justice is done, to get to the bottom of it, and our concern is for the girl and her family. We really, really deeply regret it." The accused Marine, Tyrone Hadnott, denies the charge, claiming that he only got on top of the teen and kissed her. Yet another rape charge has been leveled against a soldier at Camp Courtney in Okinawa, Japan. The newest allegation comes from a Filipino woman who says she was assaulted by an American serviceman at an Okinawa hotel earlier this month. The news comes at a time when Okinawans are already protesting outside Camp Courtney following allegations that Marine Tyrone Hadnott raped a local 14-year-old school girl. Well, Okinawans are not taking this incident lightly: hundreds (many of them women) have been protesting across the island, and their anger was further inflamed this past weekend after allegations of drunk driving, trespassing and theft committed by U.S. soldiers were made. The United States has responded by instituting strict curfews on the military and civilian residents of Okinawa's Camp Courtney: According to the AP, soldiers will be restricted to bases, places or work or off-base housing. The U.S. has also declared February 22 a "Day of Reflection" for U.S. military in Japan and have constructed a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Task Force," but for many Okinawans, it's too little, too late. A United States Marine is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl near his base in Okinawa, Japan. 38-year-old Tyrone Hadnott claims that he merely got on top of the girl and kissed her, according to Reuters. This incident further inflames local Okinawa residents, who already resent what they see as an excessive American post-WWII military presence. The military base in question, Camp Courtney, has already been the site of sexual assault. In 1995, three officers were convicted of raping a 12-year-old Japanese girl.
