Spanish artist Santiago Sierra's new gallery show currently on display in London includes sculptures made out of human feces. Yeah, shit. As part of his work with the charity Sulabh International, Sierra has created large monoliths from fecal matter collected by women from the Indian cities of New Delhi and Jaipur, women "whose caste prevents them from taking any other employment other than scavenging human waste from public loos." Yeah, it's fucking degrading and it's fucking disgusting, but, apparently, there's a benevolence behind Sierra's creation. But is that benevolence actual advocacy or artistic exploitation?
