Somewhere there is a drug dealer who is really pissed that 30 pounds of his choice coke has gone missing. But if he wanted it so badly, he shouldn't have mailed it to the United Nations. The cocaine was sent inside fake diplomatic pouches, and ended up in the UN's mailroom last week. People there immediately recognized the pouches as knock-offs. The real diplomatic mail bags have "United Nations" printed on them, as well as the logo. But these only had the logo, and didn't have any address, manifest, or anything—and yet for some reason DHL delivered them no questions asked. It's highly unlikely that some diplomat was having a load of coke delivered for a party. Instead, they think the fake pouches, which originated from Mexico, were meant to ensure the packages made it through border security without being inspected—but it looks like the plan worked a little too well. A day after we learned that Greg Kelly, co-host of Fox 5's Good Day New York and the son of New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, had been accused of rape, new details are emerging about the alleged attack and its aftermath. Yesterday, we found out that Kelly met the his accuser on the street, and, after going out drinking, the pair ended up in her office at a downtown law firm where she says the incident occurred. Today we learned that the woman told police that she was "virtually passed out" when Kelly allegedly assaulted her. She also claims she became pregnant as a result of the rape and chose to end the pregnancy. More »

It was an unusually dangerous weekend on the New York City subway. And one particular set of train passengers got the horrifying shock of a lifetime. It happened at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, when people got off the L train at the Sixth Avenue stop and saw a man's severed head wedged between the train car and the platform. Oh god oh god oh god. These two new ads, which appear on billboards in Albany, New York, are attempting to teach people that eating cheese is hazardous to your health and will make you fat. Luckily, the campaign, which is sponsored by a nonprofit group called Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), fails pretty miserably. The first and most obvious problem is that these ads look crappy and play on the weak and tired premise that fat people are disgusting. But even if they were the most effectively designed ads in the history of time, it wouldn't matter. There aren't enough persuasive health arguments or scare tactics in the world to turn us against cheese! (Well, there is lactose intolerance, but until they figure out how to spread that via ads, most of us are safe.) More »

So much of the discussion of rape and violence against women centers on educating girls on how to protect themselves, so it's nice to know that, at least in a few schools, educators are going out of their way to talk to boys about their role in stopping sexual violence. A man who groped two young women's butts in a Harlem subway station wound up getting shot in the lower back when an off-duty police officer tried to arrest him. Officer Jason Butler got involved when a woman started calling for police because her 13-year-old daughter had been groped. Then an 18-year-old said she'd been touched too and pointed to 22-year-old Jacob Sanford, who was sitting on a bench. Butler showed his badge and tried to arrest Sanford, but they got into a fight and Sanford managed to lift Butler off the platform. Butler fired one shot because he was afraid that Sanford was about to throw him into the path of an oncoming train. Sanford was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. He has 19 arrests, including two charges of assaulting police officers, and has admitted to the two gropings. More »

Three men have accused former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine of molesting them as children, but today a New York district attorney announced that he can't be prosecuted. Though he believes two of the accusers are credible, their claims weren't properly investigated when the came forward in 2002, and it wouldn't have mattered anyway because the statute of limitations had already expired. Colleges place heavy emphasis on test scores in their highly competitive admissions processes. Where you go to college determines what sort of ilk you rub elbows with while doing kegstands, who will hire you, how much money you will make, and your success and happiness forever and always, and poor test scorers are sent to hard labor camps in the Adirondacks. It's no wonder that teenagers pull out all the stops in pursuit of the perfect SAT score, and it's no wonder that often times their desperation combined with their general teen malaise drives them to cheat. A familiar face was among the dozen or so people arrested last night at Occupy Wall Street. Naomi Wolf, who writes for the Huffington Post, was attending an event where New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was presented with the site's "Game Changer of the Year Award." About 50 protesters showed up and when Wolf heard police telling them they needed a permit to use a megaphone, she intervened to say that the permit requirement wasn't true. Wolf was warned several times that she'd be arrested for demonstrating without a permit, and when she didn't back down she was cuffed. More »
