Narcissistic Men Hate The Women They Can't Dominate

Here’s something depressing: Narcissistic men are more likely to feel hostility toward heterosexual women than gay men, lesbians, or other heterosexual men, according to a new study.

Why straight women? Well, because they’re supposed to dominate heterosexual women. Perhaps more disturbingly, straight ladies are described as the “gatekeepers in men’s quest for sexual pleasure, patriarchal power and status.” Gay men simply aren’t a threat like we are, with our ability to say no and whatnot.

Even though it isn’t exactly a surprise that some men – especially assholes who can probably best be described as narcissistic – are openly aggressive towards women, the study from Kent State University serves as a depressing reminder of how much gender roles can warp an already abnormal mind. Dr. Keiller, a lead author on the study, explains their findings, which are actually a little scary:

The present study suggests that heterosexual men’s narcissism is linked to an adversarial and angry stance toward heterosexual women more than toward other groups. Although narcissists may want to maintain feelings of superiority and power over all people, narcissistic heterosexual men are particularly invested in subordinating heterosexual women. The results suggest that narcissistic hostility is associated with a group’s potential to provide or withhold gratification rather than ideology about a group’s sexual orientation or conformity to heterosexual gender roles.

How progressive of them.

I said before that the findings don’t really come as a surprise. And they don’t – but this is why it’s so frightening. Dr. Keiller’s description of the narcissistic male view could be molded to fit any number of violent men (George Sodini, in particular, comes to mind). To make matters worse, every one of us has probably encountered a person who falls into this category, who feels genuine hostility towards women simply because we are the “gatekeepers” to their gratification. While not all narcissistic, straight men will go on to murder, even in its most controlled iteration, this type of person will never be harmless.
