In honor of Joni Mitchell's 65th birthday on Friday, the Wall Street Journal interviewed some of her friends. "In a hundred years, when they ask who was the greatest songwriter of the era, it's got to be her or Dylan. I think it's her. And she's a better musician than Bob," says David Crosby, who produced her debut album, 1968's Song to a Seagull. "She faced the tide of what the record companies expected of someone who had folk hits and wrote 'Woodstock,'" says longtime band member Wayne Shorter. "She was willing to stand up and not be a victim of her success, and not be subservient to the 'fan club' syndrome." [WSJ] More »

A documentary that was 11 years in the making, Patti Smith: Dream of Life focuses on the poster girl for the protopunk scene as she attempts to revive her musical career. Directed and filmed in black-and-white by commercial fashion photographer Steven Sebring, the film focuses less on Smith's past and more on who she has become, as well as her philosophical ramblings on various subjects. There is no real chronological structure to the film, and by not supplying viewers with enough Smith history, the film inevitably makes itself only available to those who are already fans. However, Smith was never about being accessible and conventional, so it is perhaps only fitting that her documentary does away with standard rock doc traditions.
