We already knew Tavi Gevinson could sing, but the 15-year-old editor-in-chief of Rookie — along with Kathy Bates and Christopher Lloyd — also voices a forthcoming animated short film called Cadaver. In one scene, her character sings Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," the favorite song of sensitive young people who sometimes have trouble with emotional directness. (Okay, second-favorite, after "Only Love Can Break Your Heart.") The 2-D short is apparently about an elderly cadaver (Lloyd) who comes back to life, seeking a last goodbye from his wife, as he's being dissected by medical students (one of whom is played by Gevinson). There's an uproar in Charlottesville, Virginia over a bunch of third graders who sang a song that contains references to the Occupy Wall Street movement while in a school music workshop. The kids, working with a group called Kid Pan Alley that runs the workshops, composed the song and performed it at Woodbrook Elementary. Then conservative bloggers freaked out because of the song's overt political messages. They're worried that tax-payer dollars were somehow being used to indoctrinate young minds and turn the children into communists. It's too bad they got so worked up because if you listen to the song, it becomes clear that, even though the song references the 99 percent, these kids don't really have any idea what they're talking about. Oh, God. Last night, Taylor Swift tweeted, "Something I've been VERY excited about for a VERY long time is going to be happening VERY soon. (and I'm not referring to Christmas)." The surprise? A song Swift made with The Civil Wars called "Safe And Sound," which will be on the soundtrack for The Hunger Games. It's a sad, acoustic ballad with the chorus: "Just close your eyes / The sun is going down / You'll be all right / No one can hurt you / In the morning light / You and I'll be safe and sound." Could be the kind of thing Katniss says to Prim — or to Peeta, in the cave. Here's the problem: It was thrilling to read about a post-apocalyptic world where kids fight to the death, but if there's one thing a reader is pretty sure doesn't exist in Panem or The Capital, it's TAYLOR SWIFT. Christ. The demographic target marketing is right on — young adult books, young adult singer — but it feels wrong. Anyway, we'll have to see how it plays out in the actual film. When the crew of the Royal Navy's HMS Ocean deployed earlier this year, they expected to be out to sea for seven weeks. But their boat was diverted to Libya and at this point, the ship has been away for for seven months. During this time, graduations and birthdays were missed, fifteen men became fathers and five had to leave the boat to get married. But recently came good news — the crew would be home for Christmas! An obvious cause for celebration, the entire ship took part in a lip dub of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" — which I'm happy to note is not the Bieber edition — and has since been approved by Mariah Carey herself.
