Women directors may not have had much luck at the Oscars this year, but things are going very well for one female director at the Sundance. Ava DuVernay, director of the drama Middle of Nowhere just won the Best Director for Dramatic Film award at the festival. She is the first black woman to win the award. Middle of Nowhere, which follows the story of a woman whose husband is incarcerated, is the second feature film she's made. In her acceptance speech today, she said she was "stunned" and talked about how important it was for "filmmakers of color to see one another's films and have them seen." The movie LOL is supposed to signal to the world that Miley Cyrus is no longer a child, but apparently she's doing it in the most Disney way possible. Getting a D in math, drinking an unidentified substance from a Solo cup, and having sex with your boyfriend makes for a fairly tame teenage rebellion — particularly when in real life there's a six paragraph section in Wikipedia devoted to Miley's various sex and drug-related scandals. There's a motto you learn in screenwriting school: "If it's personal, it's universal." Human experiences transcend race, gender, geographical borders. And Pariah, the excellent (heartbreaking, heartwarming, highly-recommended) film written and directed by Dee Rees, might be about a young black girl growing up in Brooklyn and struggling with her feelings, but it's not a movie for African-Americans, or gays, or New Yorkers. It's for everyone. The problem? It's being described as the "new lesbian film" or "a movie about black lesbians." The reality is that the film deals with internal conflict, family drama, friendship and defining yourself. More »

It opened behind Mission Impossible: Ghost Booty Call ($29 M) and Sherlock 2 ($20 M), making only $12 million opening weekend. $12 million might sound like a lot of money, but GWTDT had a budget of $90 million. $12 million is what you call a disappointment. Angelina Jolie's directorial debut, in The Land Of Blood And Honey, hits theaters today, and it will be interesting to see what kind of reception it receives: The most famous woman in the world could tell any story she wanted, and this is what she chose. A couple torn asunder by the Bosnian war. A love story, but really about a love that could have been. The film is distressing, harrowing and gritty, and it's been kept under tight wraps: No Hollywood types saw the script (written by Angelina) before filming began, and although I attended a screening and a press conference (yes, she was there) a few weeks ago, I, as well as the other journalists in the room, were instructed not to write, tweet, or talk about the film or the event until its release. Oh, God. Last night, Taylor Swift tweeted, "Something I've been VERY excited about for a VERY long time is going to be happening VERY soon. (and I'm not referring to Christmas)." The surprise? A song Swift made with The Civil Wars called "Safe And Sound," which will be on the soundtrack for The Hunger Games. It's a sad, acoustic ballad with the chorus: "Just close your eyes / The sun is going down / You'll be all right / No one can hurt you / In the morning light / You and I'll be safe and sound." Could be the kind of thing Katniss says to Prim — or to Peeta, in the cave. Here's the problem: It was thrilling to read about a post-apocalyptic world where kids fight to the death, but if there's one thing a reader is pretty sure doesn't exist in Panem or The Capital, it's TAYLOR SWIFT. Christ. The demographic target marketing is right on — young adult books, young adult singer — but it feels wrong. Anyway, we'll have to see how it plays out in the actual film. Here's the first look at HBO's Game Change, the TV movie based on the book of the same name, which comes out in March. Julianne Moore does a pretty good Sarah Palin impersonation (it's got to be hard to follow in Tina Fey's footsteps) and it's nice to finally see McCain's decision to unleash Palin on America set to tense, frightening music, just like it is in our nightmares. If you're wondering why every nerd you know is bleary-eyed and unfocused today, it's probably they were up late analyzing the new trailer for the first installment of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In the clip, we learn that Martin Freeman looks great as Bilbo, Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett are back, and the cinematography is just as stunning as it was in all three Lord of the Rings films. That's all geeks really need to know, but if you aren't a Tolkien fan feel free to pretend you're too cool for all this talk of dwarves and Misty Mountains. This scene from a short '80s film (that once appeared on MTV!) highlights the frustrations of a young girl at the computer lab. She, apparently, is what some bully's Dad calls a "techno-dunce." Obviously this leads to the classroom teacher bringing the boy to the principals office; when she shuts the door behind her, and the kids launch into what's possibly the most ridiculous musical number ever portrayed in film. I'm not sure how the theatrics helped to teach the young lady how to get over her fear of computers — or even use them at all — but I suppose the collective bullying by a classroom of peers through songs is enough to get anything accomplished. The trailer for Dark Knight Rises recently hit theaters (and websites) and one of the biggest complaints? Bane — played by Tom Hardy — is really hard to understand. Apparently Bane, the villain of the flick, gets his super-strength from a drug that he continuously inhales. (Glue?) In this trailer, you see Tom Hardy with a mask that covers his nose and mouth; his words get slightly muffled. When you first heard that Pixar is releasing a film called Brave you were probably surprised to learn that it's about a feisty Scottish girl, not one of the Atlanta Braves. Now it's emerged that the Atlanta National League Baseball Club, which owns the team, has been working for months to save other moviegoers from facing the same confusion. Though the team doesn't have a trademark on the singular word "brave," it's objecting to Pixar using the title because fans often use the term when referring to a single player. Shame on Pixar for trying to trick people into watching a kids movie with a female protagonist by suggesting it's about the adventures of a baseball player on team with a problematic name. More »

On 60 Minutes last night, Meryl Streep talked about her new movie, The Iron Lady, and Morley Safer had the audacity to point out that she often plays strong-minded women. Streep countered: "No one has ever asked an actor, 'You're playing a strong-minded man…' We assume that men are strong-minded, or have opinions. But a strong-minded woman is a different animal." It's pretty obvious that Streep is interested in memorable women, however: She showed Safer a house where a woman who was a slave acted heroically, and she is part of the movement working on creating a National Women's History Museum in D.C. If you so much as turn on the television or stick your head outside these days, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the holidays are the most wonderful time of the year. But they are not. In fact, awards season is the most wonderful time of the year, at least for us pop-culture obsessives — we get to spend the next two months watching movies, arguing about movies, looking at red carpets, analyzing awards nominees, pontificating about The State of the Industry, and writing out countless nominee lists, like the one below, which contains the (bajillion) major nominees for the 2012 Golden Globes. While the Oscars are traditionally considered the most important of all the major awards ceremonies and shows, the Globes are pretty much the least important — the Hollywood Foreign Press? Pshh — second only to the People's Choice Awards. However, they are by far and away the most entertaining for us to watch: pretty much every celebrity from television and film will be packed into a single auditorium, wearing fancy clothes and drinking, on camera, for at least two hours.
