Woman Gets Her Engagement Ring Back 36 Years After It Fell Into A Toilet

It's not often you hear a romantic story that involves a toilet, but here goes! A couple in Montana, Donna and Terry Claver, recently got the surprise of a lifetime when their engagement ring came back to them — almost by magic — 36 years after it went missing and was presumed dead. The drama began when Donna took her pink sapphire engagement ring off and set it on top of the toilet in their bathroom. The ring slid down into the bowl and somehow got stuck inside a hole at the bottom of the toilet. Donna and Terry tried to rescue the ring, but there was no getting it out of there without destroying the toilet — which they didn't want to do because they couldn't afford to buy a new toilet. As we're all well aware, one of the many prongs in the fundie battle for control of our uteri is to call the contents often found within a person. Well, in a slight glimmer of hope for those of us who don't think that this one cell can be called a person or a life, they've failed in Montana. State Representative Rick Jore was spearheading the fight to get Constitutional Initiative 100 onto the ballot in November, which would've defined fertilized eggs as people and conferred all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship onto them. Jore needed 44,000 signatures by yesterday and got less than half. Even the Catholic bishops in the state think there are better ways to make abortion illegal, while others pointed out that it would also have made IUDs illegal, opened women who have miscarriages up to criminal investigation and potentially forced women undergoing in vitro fertilization to carry all the eggs fertilized in the procedure to term. In Montana, former cathouses and bordellos are now tourist attractions, where, according to the Economist, Big Sky Country enthusiasts can dream of the notorious Madam Ida, who "distributed gilt neckties to favoured customers." (No doubt against a backdrop of crushed red velvet and giant, filigree mirrors.) Americans harbor "enduring fondness for the turbulent world of unfettered freedom and vice," the Economist reasons, and prostitutes are a pivotal part of that fantasy world. Pop culture is also littered "happy hookers" stereotype, in films like Pretty Woman, Mighty Aphrodite, and in documentaries like HBO's Cathouse, which focused on Nevada's Bunny Ranch brothel. Brags the cable channel: "...the Bunny Ranch is a tightly-run ship where johns are 'clients' and prostitutes are 'working girls' with their own private rooms and weekly doctor visits.
