Rick Santorum's big wins in Missouri, Minnesota, and Colorado don't mean much in the grand scheme of things, but they do seem to have given his campaign a big financial boost. The campaign confirmed they raised $1 million in the 24 hours following his victories, and $800,000 of that came from online donations. That sure is a lot of money—not that much to a political campaign, sure, but think about how many birth control pills that could buy for Rick's imaginary uterus! Or how big a donation that would be to the NOH8 campaign or to Planned Parenthood. If only there was a way to ensure that the next time—if there even is a next time—Santorum wins anything, for every dollar that's donated to him an equal and opposite donation will be made to an organization that can help balance out his whackadoodle notions of what's right for this country. The Timesposted a rollover graphic of eclectic 1% occupations this morning that will help you calibrate your stink eye the next time you're surrounded by seemingly 99 percenters. At first glance, you might be surprised to find that 0.2% of butlers, maids, cleaners, and whatever other servile occupations (human wheelbarrow? organic birdbath?) the monopoly men and women of America have created to serve the endless whimsy that wealth breeds, but read carefully before you drop everything and trade your bachelor's degree in classical languages for a feather duster. Some of those eye-catching 1 percenters — school teachers, social workers, and food service workers among them — probably aren't earning 1% paychecks all on their own. The Times graphic mixes everyone together in one rich soup — 1 percenters, whether self-made, married, or born, are 1 percenters based on their household income, not their individual earning potentials. Crossing the $380,000 household income threshold isn't easy to do on, say, a single public employee's salary, but even though the occupational diversity in this graph is somewhat misleading, it does teach us an important lesson — 1 percenters walk among us just like the aliens from They Live! Here are some of their craftiest disguises:

• Apparel retail sales clerks (1.5% of the 571,893 with this job are in America's top 1% of households)
• Social workers (0.6% of 860,416)
• Cooks (0.3% of 3.5 million)
• Teachers (0.9% of 6.8 million)
• Clergy and religious workers (0.6% of 623,487)
• Hairdressers and cosmetologists (0.4% of 1.1 million)

Journalist Pete Iorizzo writes in the Albany Times Union that he and his new wife weren't able to deposit wedding checks made out to "Mr. and Mrs. Pete Iorizzo" because their local Bank of America branch couldn't accept that his wife is who she says she is. Though the newlyweds were willing to produce a marriage certificate, a bank clerk informed them that since the bride kept her name, "Mrs. Peter Iorizzo does not exist." When she steps down as CEO of the New York Times on December 31, Janet Robinson will receive nearly a $15 million severance, which, according to Reuters, includes a $4.5 million consulting fee and $10.9 million in benefits that she hoarded like a greedy corporate troll over her 28 years at the paper.  Robinson would not have been eligible to receive pension benefits until she reached the 30-year service mark, but as per her separation agreement with Times Co., she gets to cash in her chips a little early. Here's a fun fact you may want to bring up over Thanksgiving dinner (if you're looking to forward to hearing Uncle Jimmy's annual rant about how President Obama is ruining the economy): The cost of a typical Thanksgiving dinner increased $5.83 this year. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, a dinner for 10 including turkey, cranberries, pumpkin pie mix, pie shells, whipping cream, peas, stuffing, rolls, sweet potatoes, whole milk, and other items will cost $49.20, up from $43.37 last year. The meal includes leftovers and only averages out to about $5 per person, so enjoying a home cooked Thanksgiving dinner is still more frugal than having fast food feast. More »

It's understandable that stores would rather not have customers pay with a coffee can full of coins on a regular basis, but Save-a-Lot in Portland, Oregon refused to make an exception even for a woman who was forced to break out the change to buy groceries for her family. The woman, identified as Jean, says she got together $32 in quarters and waited until the checkout line was clear. "And when I went up, I told them, you know ‘I have change. Sorry, it's hard times right now.' And they go, 'well we can only accept $5,'" Jean said. A manager got involved and insisted she use the coin sorting machine, which charges a 10% fee. Finally the store agreed to cover the 10% when Jean started crying and another customer offered to giver her bills for her quarters. It's legal for stores to refuse to accept certain types of payment, but hassling impoverished customers still makes you a jerk. More »
