Fashion week isn't just about pretty dresses and champagne: it's also about long hours for the people who work it. And some of those workers are children. The Times is reporting on the Council of Fashion Designers of America's efforts to ensure all models who work New York Fashion Week are over 16 years old. Victoria's Secret model Kylie Bisutti has recently given up her modeling contract because she feels that modeling for the company clashes with her Christian faith. While it may be easy to make fun of Bisutti, who won her position during the 2009 Victoria's Secret Model Search, for her "my body belongs to my husband" nonsense, it's difficult to harangue someone for setting their own limit of how much or how little they choose to be sexualized. The Daily Mail identified the model whose "socially irresponsible" swimsuit photos were recently banned by the U.K. Advertising Standards Authority as 21-year-old Scottish model Amanda Hendrick. Hendrick, who has been working as a model since she was 14, had a pretty great spring-summer runway season: she walked for Balenciaga, Jean Paul Gaultier, Costume National, Temperley London, and Paul Smith, among others. She once said in an interview, "I still do sometimes think that I would be better off going to college and just getting a wee job somewhere…In Milan I would spend about 10 hours a day just running from casting to casting without getting a break." On last night's America's Next Top Model: All-Stars, a very special challenge was presented to the ladies: to audition for a role on CSI, using over-complicated medical jargon that the models will inevitably mispronounce, all for the smug enjoyment of viewers at home. Given how the prize at hand (obtaining the role and actually filming it for TV) was supremely coveted, enough for each of the ladies brought their A-game. The top international modeling agency Women has copped to an oopsie: its most promising new face of the season, a girl by the name of Valerija Sestic who has already walked for 16 of the biggest designers at New York fashion week, is underage. In a season when all modeling agencies made a pledge not to put girls under 16 forward for runway work, Women lied. Sestic is 15. And yet here she is, pictured walking in runway shows for Prabal Gurung, DKNY, and Marc by Marc Jacobs. There was a whole lot of commotion in the hall on Friday night as I took my seat at Cynthia Rowley. I noticed Alexa Chung and Nigel Barker in the front row, as well as usuals like Leigh Lezark, and then tried to imagine who everyone else was. And then, after the protective plastic covering had already been pulled off the runway, a small figure in white rushed out from backstage to take a seat in the front row. A photographer stepped out to take her picture, breaking one of the Rules Of Fashion Week: never step on the runway after it's been de-plasticated, unless you are a) a model or b) a celebrity or possibly c) a first responder attending to some kind of imminent disaster. The photographer was booted by security, his badge yanked and his camera confiscated. Lindsay, from what little I could see, for whatever it's worth, seemed to enjoy the show. Photographer Gabrielle Revere followed 19-year-old model Karlie Kloss from Paris to New York to her home in St. Louis, and created a gorgeous gallery of images, detailing the energy, beauty, promise and ambition of a young woman whose life is full of contrasts. She wears couture for work, yet, according to Life, she "still sweetly brings homemade cookies to the crew at photo shoots, still goes home to her family whenever she can, still worried whether she looked all right in her prom dress." Recently, a Japanese Vogue spread for which Crystal Renn had taped her temples garnered a lot of controversy when a behind-the-scenes video showed the tape (which didn't appear in the final spread thanks to the magic of Photoshop). Given fashion spreads that glorify or reference blackface have become common in recent years, you could forgive fashion writers for concluding that Vogue had employed eye tape to make Renn look "more Asian." Indeed, that was my initial assumption. I brought the shoot up on the phone with Crystal yesterday,* and she surprised me with her explanation of the eye tape, and why she — not the makeup artist or the fashion editor — had requested it that day. Karl Lagerfeld says he sent flowers to Dominique Strauss-Kahn and his wife when they returned to France after the Manhattan district attorney dropped the rape charges made against him by a cleaner at a hotel. "Even in America, Clinton survived his blow job," says Lagerfeld. "But there was not a lot of doubt that that was consensual," interjected the interviewer. Fashion blogger, high school student, Jezebel contributor, and fashion writer Tavi Gevinson launched her new site, Rookie yesterday, which has already published plenty of interesting stuff, including an editor's letter in which Gevinson lays out her vision for the publication. Gevinson says that experiences like participating in the Chicago SlutWalk motivated her to found a site where teenaged girls could have "someplace online for the discussion to continue." Gevinson also says one of her main goals is to create a site with a minimum of gimmickry. "After being in all these meetings with publishing companies and advertisers and stuff, it's like everyone just wants to trick people into reading their website. If the content is good, people will read it." And she's aware that her audience is often marketed to. "The teenager was kind of invented and started out as just a market. I think it's important to know that as a teenager, especially a teenage girl, so many people want your money, and that's also often dependent on telling you that you need to improve yourself with all these products. It's good to have that awareness — there's some of that to Rookie, but really more in spirit than straight-up preaching media literacy." She didn't end up teaming up with Sassy and XOJane.com founder Jane Pratt and her backers, Say Media, because "I want to have control. I realize there's no way to talk about it without sounding like a dictator but I care a lot about all the work that's gone into the site and I would hate to be in a position where I didn't know exactly what was going to happen to it...There's certain things I don't know about the future, and if we have to go on hiatus I would like to be able to do that and not feel like I'm not doing my job right or something." Which is not to say that she's going to be a timid boss: "Women and girls are taught to ask for things in a way that's kind of especially shy or especially careful. But when we're working on deadlines, it's become easier for me to just, like, straight-up ask for things and say that there's something I would like to be fixed in some article. Lady Gaga used her latest V column to praise 15-year-old blogger/freelance writer/high school student Tavi Gevinson, and shit-talk New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn. (Horyn once wrote a blog post expressing mild dislike of a Versace dress the Lady wore.) "Why have we decided that one person's opinion matters more than anyone else's?" asks Gaga, who lives in a magical world where the relativity fairy makes all opinions equally valid. We agree that Gevinson is a talented young writer, but to argue that what makes her great is due to the "democratic" nature of the Internet is to totally miss the point; Tavi would be a promising writer in any medium. And Horyn has a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern and over 25 years of experience reporting on pretty much every aspect of the fashion industry; those things alone separate her categorically from the barely literate Tumbling masses (who not-coincidentally probably totally love Lady Gaga's Versace dress!). Horyn is also one of the few fashion critics left who actually criticizes anything, ever; in a business that's basically one giant conflict-of-interest where few seem to care about aesthetic or even ethical standards when personal and financial relationships are at stake, Horyn takes the fact that designers occasionally disinvite her as a badge of honor. Which she should. That Gaga CC'd her column to "Intellectuals" while making such a grossly anti-expert, anti-intellectual argument is maybe the most ridiculous thing about this. The investors that saved American Apparel from bankruptcy four months ago are selling their stock in the company. A consortium of investors bought $15 million worth of American Apparel shares at 90 cents a pop back in March is looking to sell those shares now that AA is trading at around 97 cents; the investors also have warrants to buy up to another $30 million worth of shares at the original 90 cent price over the next six months.
