Marc Jacobs Said To Be Replacing John Galliano At Dior

Women's Wear Daily is reporting that Bernard Arnault has at last found a replacement for John Galliano at Christian Dior, the €21 billion luxury brand that is one of the biggest and sparkliest jewels in LVMH's crown. According to "sources," Marc Jacobs is in "talks" to leave Louis Vuitton to take over Dior. Phoebe Philo, who currently designs for Céline, might replace Jacobs at Vuitton in addition to her current work. Galliano was fired this spring after making a series of drunken, racist rants to strangers in a Paris bistro; one of the outbursts was caught on camera, and the disgraced designer faced charges under France's strict hate speech laws. LVMH, Dior's parent company, has taken its time in replacing him — it even let a couture season occur while the house was rudderless. If he were appointed, Marc Jacobs would be the first American (and in fact the first non-European of any nationality) to design for Dior. Australian model Andrej Pejic is on one of the covers of New York's fall fashion issue. "In this society, if a man is called a woman, that's the biggest insult he could get," he tells the magazine. "Is that because women are considered something less?" Pejic appears topless on the cover, something which in the recent past has not been well-received by certain chain bookstores; there's no word on whether New York, like Dossier before it, was required to wrap the issue in an opaque cover. Of his rates — modeling is one of the few fields where women out-earn men by a wide margin — Pejic jokes, "I don't get out of bed for less than $50 a day. I want to make that clear to America. What's great (and terrifying) about children is that they haven't yet been turned into properly behaved humanoid drones by years of society's message training and petty authoritarian bullshit like the rest of us: they ask pointed questions when adults hold their tongues, they don't care about getting messy, if they don't like Aunt Lucy's disgustipating green bean casserole they will say so in a tantrum to her face, and dammit, when they are confronted with a crowded room full of weirdly dressed, stressed-out strangers and their first totally natural reaction is to cry, they are going to cry. Copiously. For a long time. With ample sniffling. And no thought to how the designer employing them may view the propriety of such a reaction. From about 2004 to 2007, you could hardly swing an it-bag at a newsagent without bumping into a fashion magazine cover with Gemma Ward's face on it. The Australian model was so omnipresent that she made the front of American Vogue — which barely uses models for covers at all — at just 16. But at 19, she pulled a kind of disappearing act: the last time she was seen on a runway was in September of 2007, and her last appearance on a magazine was a cover of Spanish Marie Claire that came out in October, 2008. Ward studied acting and made some movies in this time — she got good reviews for The Black Balloon — and whenever the retirement rumor mill went into overdrive Ward would release a statement maintaining she hadn't "quit" modeling, but she wasn't shooting anything new. We can report that the just ended New York fashion week featured the least racially diverse cast of models since 2008. New York fashion week featured 137 designer runway shows and presentations, and 5,269 different fall outfits were presented to the world's retailers and press. Of those 5,269 looks, 4,468 — an overwhelming 84.8% — were modeled by white women. 801 of those looks were given to models who aren't white. Black models were used 384 times. Asian models were used 323 times. Non-white Latina models were used 79 times. Models of other races only made it onto the runways of New York City — one of the most racially diverse places on this planet — 15 times. More »
