Medic Shot In Ukraine Tweets 'I Am Dying,' Reportedly Recovering Now

Latest

Anti-government protestors and riot police continue to clash in Ukraine in what may be the bloodiest day since the protests began. CNN reports that over 100 people have been killed and 500 injured since short-lived truce crumbled this morning. Like so many recent revolutions, the situation in Ukraine is playing out over social media: as a result, observers far removed from the violence can witness the chaos and devastation in Independence Square.

In one horribly devastating instance of this, a Ukrainian medic named Olesya Zhukovskaya tweeted, “I am dying” after being shot in the throat by a government sniper. The post has been widely shared on social media and news outlets alike — shortly after, the EuroMaidan Twitter tweeted a photo of her (taken from one of her social media accounts) with the caption, in English, “she’s just 21 year’s old.”

Although EuroMaidan later posted a tweet claiming that Zhukovskaya had died, conflicting reports indicate that she underwent surgery and is now recovering. Reporter Vitalii Sediuk recently tweeted this:

Hopefully she’s fine: the news of her recovery has been circulating Twitter without dispute so far, which is a heartening sign amidst so much bleak and horrible news.
