Fans of Mickey D's rejoice, they've suspended their practice of using pink slime in your burgers. Oh, sorry, you didn't know that your "100% pure beef patty" was loaded with the pink gooey mess you see above? Yeah, well, it was. The pink slime is technically meat, because it begins life as a pile of beef scraps, or "select lean beef trimmings," as McD's calls them. The scraps are then soaked in ammonium hydroxide (also used as a household cleaner and in fertilizers), which bleaches the meat and kills all the bacteria that was clinging to it. San Francisco Is No Match For McDonald's Evil Genius

San Francisco's ban on Happy Meal toys goes into effect tomorrow, but McDonald's has already devised a plan that will allow them to keep selling the toys, and may even encourage sales of the kids' meals. Since restaurants in the city can't include a toy with a meal that doesn't meet certain nutritional standards, the chain is simply allowing parents to buy the toy with the meal for an additional 10 cents, which will go to Ronald McDonald House charities. Previously, if kids were begging for the plastic blob du jour, parents could buy it without the meal for $2.18. Now if they want the toy, they have to buy it along with the full meal. More »

The reconstituted pork-based patty probably contains tripe, heart, and scalded stomachs. That may sound a bit gross to some, but they're all edible meats already found in products like sausages. Surprisingly, the bun seems more troubling. It contains a tiny amount of azodicarbonamide, which is banned as a food additive in Europe and Australia. The flour-bleaching agent is often used in foamed plastics, like those found in gym mats and shoe soles. After swabbing several Arizona McDonald's as part of her crusade against bacteria in kids' playrooms, Erin Carr-Jordan received a hand-delivered letter informing her that she's no longer allowed in eight local restaurants. Carr-Jordan says she believes the incident that really set off the chain was when she found MRSA in a PlayPlace. She demanded that the area be shut down after she saw a child licking a ball. McDonald's says it's still willing to talk with her, but she's become "disruptive to the employees and customers within our franchise's restaurants." Last week in Temecula, California, workers at McDonald's successfully captured a chicken that had been giving patrons the evil eye as they tried to order nuggets. Workers lured the bird with bits of bun from atop the drive-through window box and sent it to live out its days with other chickens. I, Megan, have experience with chickens: My one and only pet, Nugget (pictured here atop my computer in 1997). So I believe that the hen wasn't trying to keep Temeculans from eating its relatives, it was probably just hungry.
