March Madness, Day 3: A Double Upset!

Our grand tournament continues apace: In the world of Cake vs. Pie March Madness, your brackets will be destroyed. Yes, this weekend saw some surprises — but we mustn’t dwell on them, especially with today’s bloodthirsty competitors.

After Friday’s Cake Conference games, Pound Cake narrowly beat Angel Food Cake — an upset! — while Coffee Cake easily sent Bundt Cake packing. Over in the Pies, Pecan Pie won out over Banana Cream Pie, but the creams still rode high with Boston Cream Pie grabbing the win in a major upset over Peanut Butter Pie (it was a close game, perhaps due in part to a rowdy crowd catcalling the legitimacy of Boston Cream’s inclusion in the Pie Conference — to which the Selection Committee has issued an official response: Get over it).

Which brings us to today — we’re more than halfway through the first round, and things are getting intense. In the Cake Conference, we’ve got luscious #4 German Chocolate facing off against the sentimental favorite, #13 Funfetti. On the neighboring court, it’s controversial #6 Wedding Cake vs. #11 Pineapple Upside-Down Cake. Over in the Pie Conference Stadium, the #4 Pumpkin powerhouse will tempt fate against #13 Lemon Meringue, while #6 Blueberry meets the unpredictable #11 seed, Rhubarb.
