Man Sent to Prison for Texting His Ex-Girlfriend Thousands of Times

An unidentified French man was sentenced this week to 10 months in jail for a campaign of harassment against his former girlfriend, which resulted in the tens of thousands of calls and texts in less than a year.

According to the Guardian, he contacted the woman an average of 73 times a day via text and phone over a ten month period. When she blocked his number, he began bombarding her parents and employer with calls.

He had been admitted to hospital in the past for depression, and struggled to cope when his girlfriend broke off their relationship in 2011. He demanded compensation for work he had carried out in their apartment.
“At the time, my logic was that until she returns the money … or at least says thank you, I would not stop the calls,” he told the court in Lyon.

The only way the woman (whose name has also been withheld) could finally stop the harassment was by arranging a meeting through a mediator to thank him. Holy fuck, that’s terrifying. In addition to his sentence, he will also be required to seek psychiatric treatment. He also was ordered to pay a fine.

He told the court in hindsight, he realizes what he did was “stupid.”
