Australian model Andrej Pejic is on one of the covers of New York's fall fashion issue. "In this society, if a man is called a woman, that's the biggest insult he could get," he tells the magazine. "Is that because women are considered something less?" Pejic appears topless on the cover, something which in the recent past has not been well-received by certain chain bookstores; there's no word on whether New York, like Dossier before it, was required to wrap the issue in an opaque cover. Of his rates — modeling is one of the few fields where women out-earn men by a wide margin — Pejic jokes, "I don't get out of bed for less than $50 a day. I want to make that clear to America. I want to stop laughing at the male model who fell over during the Newport Beach Film Festival fashion show (which for some reason exists, and is called "Fashion Island," which sounds like the name of a bad reality TV show, I'm thinking Stylista-cum-Temptation Island bad), but I just can't. Maybe it's that smug, "Hey girl" grin he gives the lady model right before he takes his divel? Or the fact that the dude fell over while wearing flat sandals? Maybe I shouldn't question it too much. I empathize and all — you can see from the shiny bottoms of his shoes that whoever styled the show forgot to mark up the soles for better traction; perhaps these were department-store clothes that had to remain in purchasable condition — but when things happen on stage that are not supposed to happen, people often find it funny. As I've been at fashion shows over the past week, I continue to be concerned about the size of the female models I've seen on the runway. They're very young and very, very thin and seeing these girls as they get poked and prodded backstage, in particular, makes me feel uncomfortable and worried for them. But apparently being worried about the weight of female models is one trend that's out; now the focus is on the men. The male mannequins, it seems, are also wasting away: on average, they are 6 feet tall and a paltry 145 lbs., a look that casting agent Patrick Scully attributes to the "Hedi Slimanization" of menswear. Says booking agent George Brown: "When I get that random phone call from a boy who says, 'I'm 6-foot-1 and I'm calling from Kansas,' I immediately ask, 'What do you weigh?' If they say 188 or 190, I know we can't use him." More »

• Poor Marc Jacobs. First the world calls him crazy, now he's caught up in a bribery scandal. Turns out that the superintendent of NYC's 69th Regiment Armory, where Jacobs' shows are held each season, demanded little cash prezzies upwards of $30,000 from Marc et al in order for him to grant them permission to show there. KCD, the PR firm that handles Marc Jacobs, is allegedly responsible for making the pay-offs. [WWD]
