A few days ago, a Kenyan man named Omari was released from the hospital after recovering from injuries sustained while defending an orphanage from a band of roving thugs— by himself. They slashed him in the face with a machete, leaving him with a large wound that required stitches. After the incident, a founder of the Longonot Education Initiative appealed to community members of Reddit, asking for $2,000 so the orphanage could build a wall to protect them. Potter works in conjunction with Beads for Education, a nonprofit group that sends almost 300 Masai girls to school in a country (Kenya) where rural girls often get little education. The Tasaru Girls Rescue Center offers a refuge for girls who want to escape a destiny of female circumcision. The Christian Science Monitor reports on a girl named Milicent, whose cousin helped her flee when her mother and grandmother insisted she be circumcised. "In my community, it is difficult for a girl who is not circumcised to get married." She was 13 at the time — she is now 18, and Milicent says, "If I hadn't come here, I would be a mother of two or three children by now. My community should understand, by not getting married early, I can get a better education, and a job to earn money for my family." 38 percent of Kenyan women between the ages of 15 and 19, and more than half of women over the age of 35 have been circumcised, according to the Kenyan Ministry of Health. Though the practice has been banned twice in Kenya, it's hard to regulate, and in some tribes like Kisii and the Masai, over 85% of women are circumcised. [CS Monitor] More »

Since Kenya's disputed election last week, hundreds of women and children have been raped during the widespread rioting between different ethnic tribes. President Mwai Kibaki, who is accused of rigging the election, is part of the Kikuyu tribe. His challenger, Raila Odinga, is part of the Luo tribe. Most of the violence has been against the Kikuyu as retribution for the allegations of vote tampering against President Kibaki. It's not just women who are being gang raped in the streets, reports the Telegraph, it's young boys as well. "Most of them have been gang-raped, one of them by 10 men," said Rahab Ngugi, the matron at a hospital in the suburbs of Nairobi. More »
