Fashion Industry Reconsiders Its Contempt For Victoria Beckham

The British Fashion Awards were last night, and while the big winner was Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, who took home Designer of the Year, the more surprising news is that industry bigwigs signalled their increasing acceptance of celebrity-designer-WAG-Spice-Girl hyphenate ne plus ultra Victoria Beckham by giving her the Designer Brand Award. (Fashion's establishment is rarely receptive to famous folks who get an inkling they'd like to design; editors who apparently can't tell the difference between a runway show and a 9th grade lunch table snickered and eye-rolled at one of Beckham's shows this year.) Beckham reportedly cried when she took the stage. She then said, "I'm sorry, I'm so rubbish," and thanked her husband and her "team" profusely. Meanwhile, in the public vote for British Style Icon, Alexa Chung beat out Kate Middleton (who was initially passed over for the shortlist, and then added a day later, after the media noticed the slight). "This is for girls who dress like awkward boys," said Chung. Presenter Kate Hudson recalled feeling "like the coolest, hippest girl in the world" when she wore Stella McCartney to the Oscars in 2001. The next morning, hungover and still Oscar-less, Hudson turned on her TV and learned "I'd made every worst-dressed list known to mankind. Later I called Stella — and we laughed our asses off." Kara DioGuardi is releasing a memoir on April 26, and inside she reveals that she was molested as a child and date-raped by a well-known music producer. When she was 11 years old, DioGuardi says a family friend's son in his late teens repeatedly abused her: "On one particular day, he took me into the back shed of his house and put his hands all over my breasts and vagina," she writes. "I remember freezing and not knowing what to do." Much later in life, as her career as a songwriter was taking off, DioGuardi claims that after she had dinner with a producer, "within a few hours, he was on top of me, pumping, sweating, and speaking to me in Spanish, not a word of which I could understand." Her Madgesty spent 90 minutes at the Opus Dei center in London, and seems to be interested in the theology of Opus Dei, which teaches "universal holiness," the belief that everyone should aspire to be a saint, that sanctity is within the reach of everyone, not just a few special individuals. Opus Dei has been accused of "secretiveness, aggressive recruiting methods, and strict rules" and there seems to be mortification involved — not necessarily whipping yourself, but perhaps sleeping without a pillow, sleeping on the floor, fasting or remaining silent for certain hours during the day. Wait… Kate Hudson is getting married? We haven't seen that movie before! Heh. In June of last year, we read the script of Something Borrowed, a cliché-laden screenplay based on the novel by Emily Giffin. Kate Hudson, the blond, is bubbly and confident, as blonds are mandated to be in romcoms; Ginnifer Goodwin, the brunette, is brainy and awkward. And though this is ostensibly a story about friendship, it revolves around a man. Of course. The twist is, without giving too much away, that the goody-two-shoes brunette girl-next-door is the Other Woman, and not the blonde. Quelle scandale. In any case, the trailer looks just like the script. They even kept the line, "You're thirty, you can't afford to be picky." It doesn't look like the worst movie ever made, but it doesn't exactly seem fresh and original, either. But, you know, audiences love tried and true, so it will most likely do very well in theaters.
