High-society events, like last night's New Yorkers for Children's Ninth Annual Fall Gala, are a nice change from celeb ones. On the one hand, you're less likely to see flat-out Uglies. But there's always a lot of subtle "bad" that's technically tasteful but really weird. Not that there weren't celebs there — think Blake Lively, Julianne Moore, Joy Bryant — but the evening belonged to Tory Burch, Celerie Kemble and their similarly-named cronies. Yale dropout-turned-model-turned-actress Joy Bryant has a column on The Huffington Post in which she writes about a run-in with fashion racism: "It was the casting for a VERY famous designer. I was on line for at least an hour or so, which SUCKS but that's what you got to do, so you do it. I finally get to the room, where the VERY famous designer is sitting at a long table with a few associates. I say hello, hand my portfolio over, and proceed to 'walk' (please reference 'Top Model'). I do so and then the VERY famous designer says to me, with a smile of course, 'Joy, you are soooo beautiful, but I'm not using black girls this season.' (Insert sound of record scratching here). Contemporaries are guaranteed exclusive access to the Whitney’s unparalleled resources and the New York art scene." Apparently this translates to the MisShapes and various women in trash bags. And no, it doesn't come cheap. Anyway, they congregated last night at Skylight in New York. New Yorkers for Children is a really amazing organization, providing social service programming for kids in the New York City foster care system. Also, Vogue editor Anna Wintour is one of its lead supporters, which is why the who's who of fashion and Hollywood all turned up for the organization's annual gala last night. Emmy Rossum, Kim Raver, Georgina Chapman, Hana Soukupova, Virginia Madsen, Eva Amurri, Joy Bryant, Leighton Meester, Mary-Kate Olsen (left), Rachel Zoe and others were there, some, of course, looking better than others.
