Geraldine Ferraro has had quite an Obama-hating, principle-abandoning year. First, claimed that Barack Obama only made it so far because he was African-American; then she got mad when people said that was offensive; next she called Obama a sexist with no evidence; and finally she tried, and failed, to explain to American the difference between "racism" and "racial resentment" to explain why she wasn't a racist. I was, to put it lightly, disappointed. But despite gender and sexism initially being the dominant issues of this election for her, she wasn't necessarily impressed with Sarah Palin (or John McCain), and, in the end, she can't bring herself to vote Republican. The new media meme is that Sarah Palin is no longer a "maverick", she's a "rogue" — all of which comes directly from McCain advisers that he's since told to shut the fuck up. But even though everyone knows that the stories are being spread by bitter McCainiacs — and, in one instance at least, a new organization more interested in pushing a narrative that reporting a story — no one actually can shut up about it. Last night's Daily Show mashed together Palin speeches, political punditry and clips from Nell, GI Jane, Kill Bill, The Fifth Element and — most hilariously — Species to illustrate our new Real American reality — that while McCainiacs might've liked their little maverick, they certainly don't appreciate her being actually maverick-y. Once upon a time, "sexism" used to mean that women were discriminated against and treated differently because of their gender. Now, it means "criticizing Sarah Palin for any reason." Along with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the old, white man who heads the Republican Party thinks it's so sexist to question $150,000 in clothing purchases, and whether it's legal for the GOP to buy such things. (80% of Guardian readers think not!) It's probably also sexist to talk about Michelle Obama's cute outfit, except maybe not, because she's not Sarah Palin. The world is so confusing today that I've run back into the arms of my former Wonkette colleague, Jim Newell, who can comfort me with electoral maps, kitties and monocles. More »
