Joe "The Cat Killer" Petcka was back in court today to ask a Manhattan judge for a retrial unless prosecutors reduce the charges against him to a no jail time, misdemeanor offense or drop the charges against him entirely. Petcka's previous trial on felony animal-cruelty charges after he beat his girlfriend's cat to death "in self-defense" ended in a mistrial last month. [NY Post] More »

Joe "Cat-Killer" Petcka, the baseball player-cum-actor whose recent trial over the murder of his girlfriend's cat resulted in a hung jury last Friday, was on The Today Show this morning with his attorney. Petcka's claim during the trial was that he was defending himself against the cat (whose name was Norman) after the cat started to attack him and Petcka had swatted at the cat too forcefully. Matt Lauer didn't seem to be buying it, noting that Petcka is a "big guy" and then asking Petcka if he did to the cat what he couldn't do to his girlfriend. Oh boy: Joseph Petcka, the New Yorker who is currently on trial for killing his girlfriend's cat, met up for a chat with the ever-s0 sympathetic New York Post columnist, Andrea Peyser. The two bonded over being the Number 1 and 2 Most Hated New Yorkers and Andrea wondered why people can't forgive him ("He killed a cat! Can't this guy get a break?").Petcka also noted that although he has lost his job and acting work ("cat killer" just doesn't seem to go over well with people, for some reason) he has found love with a new girlfriend who has "an awesome dog." In testimony that began yesterday, a former baseball player-turned-actor who had a brief appearance on Sex and the City was accused of killing his girlfriend's cat because he was jealous. Joe Petcka is on trial for aggravated cruelty to animals for killing the cat, named Norman, in March of 2007. Petcka's former girlfriend claims that, on the night of Norman's death, Petcka accused her of loving the cat more than him. Norman was found dead under Altobelli's bedside table with broken teeth, broken ribs, a broken leg, a torn tongue, massive internal injuries including a chest cavity filled with blood. [MSNBC] More »

We're extremely sad to report that a player of one of our favorite sports (baseball) who was once a prospect for our favorite team (the NY Mets) and appeared on one of our least-favorite shows (Sex and the City) has been arrested on charges that he beat his girlfriend's cat to death.
