The fact that 80% of Pinterestusers are women has naturally led the site — the latest social network darling — to be denigrated by the rest of the internet as something "confusing" and ultimately frivolous for its users' focus on domesticity, weddings, fashion, crafting, and home decor. Obviously this line of thought is sexist. But it's also stupid — a new study finds that Pinterest drives more traffic than YouTube, Reddit, Google+, LinkedIn and MySpace. It would seem that Pinterest — the "virtual pinboard" that "allows you to organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web" — is a force to be reckoned with, on par with the likes of Twitter. (While the Internet Boys Club might not understand the virtues of mood boards, certainly they understand those of traffic stats.) So what is it that makes Pinterest — which is inherently gender neutral — so implicitly "girly"? Perhaps the answer lies in how easily the site allows women to connect with, share, and organize their aspirations. More »

In the past year people have proven that they have a truly undeniable urge to say and do stupid things on Facebook, and that includes plenty of teachers. From the elementary school teacher who made fun of a student's hairstyle on the site to a nursery school teacher fired for tricking her ex into thinking they had a daughter, educators have been disciplined, let go, or even arrested for things they posted online, even when they had little to do with their students. Now school across the country are trying to combat the problem by issuing new guidelines that ban teachers from private communications with kids via social networking sites. The intention is to protect both teachers and students, but the new rules may be punishing those who use the technology effectively rather than just a handful of idiots and sleazeballs who shouldn't be in a classroom anyway. According to a new study, a certain Nigerian prince would have had more luck if he was a woman, and could supply a sexy photo. A study of 1,500 American and British internet users by the anti-virus software company Bitdefender found that men are more willing to share personal information online, particularly if there's a beautiful woman involved. More men were willing to hit "confirm" on a request from an unknown yet clearly attractive friend. 64.2% of women always accept friend requests from strangers, but the number is only 55.4% for men. Plus, only 16% of women let anyone view their personal information, compared to about a quarter of men who make themselves available in case any hot women want to get in touch with them (or steal money from their bank accounts).
