The title of homecoming queen usually goes to the Regina Georges of the world, but one Texas high school has crowned the right girl. Kristen Pass, 18, who was born with Down syndrome, was named homecoming queen on Friday night during half-time at Aledo High School football stadium. Kristen was one of three chosen from the senior class to vie for the title. The fathers of the nominees traditionally escort them to the game, but Kristen's dad passed away two years ago, so her grandfather, David Campbell, led her onstage. "She didn't say much [when she was crowned], she was too busy smiling," he said. "I gave her a kiss on the cheek and a hug and she was kind of letting it soak in. It got real when we got to the sidelines. All her friends came over and she was giving high-fives to everyone." [ABC News] More »

Last night on The Paper, the kids got ready for Homecoming. Adam (whose dance and shirt in this clip is amazing) triumphed over the football jock by winning Homecoming King. And Amanda was asked to the dance by a kid from the Latin Club, only to be let down after he got grounded and was forced to back out. Seriously, what the hell did the Latin Club kid do to get grounded? Do kids in high school still get "grounded"? Anyway, props to Amanda for being the trouper she is and going to the dance anyway. Wall Street Journal columnist Jeffrey Zaslow bemoans the death of the school dance today in a column about how his teenage daughter got invited to Homecoming by a guy who didn't even buy tickets, because all his friends were just, like, hanging out in a basement watching movies OR WHATEVER... And Jeffrey thought about making his daughter force her date — a "good kid", he maintains; oh sure! — to shrug off the peer pressure and take her to the dance like a gentleman, but she was like "OMG dad that would be so embarrassing," so he did the only more embarrassing thing and wrote a column in a national newspaper quoting Laura Sessions Stepp about it. Oh, Jeff! He means so well. You really have to read the whole thing to feel how painfully well he means: "As the father of three daughters, I wish that more parents of sons would talk to their boys about being respectful, and about the thrill that can come from holding hands."
