Hero Cat Receives ‘Hero Dog’ Award for Rescuing Child From Attack

Let’s give it up for Tara, the badass Bakersfield cat who saved a child from a vicious dog attack last year. The seven-year-old Tabby has been recognized by the Society for The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles for her fearless heroism and was given a very special prize.

Tara has been chosen as the recipient of the spcaLA’s annual “Hero Dog” award, which is usually reserved for pups. According to KTLA, this is the first time the award has been given to a kitty.

In May 2014, video footage showed Jeremy Triantafilo riding his bicycle in the driveway of his family’s home when the neighbor’s dog suddenly attacked him. The cat immediately pounced on the canine, scaring him away. Thanks to Tara, Jeremy sustained only minor injuries.

“We were so impressed by Tara’s bravery and fast action that the selection committee decided that a cat this spectacular should be the National Hero Dog” said spcaLA President, Madeline Bernstein. “A cat who was abused, forgotten, or neglected by her family would not have been as likely to perform selfless, heroic acts to save her companion.”

Tara will also receive a year’s supply of cat food for her efforts and probably a million cuddles.
