Maybe this brief history of Mother’s Day (which owes itself to the Civil War) will inspire those giftless procrastinators among you to swing by your local grocery store and dig through the discount DVD bin until you (inevitably) find a two-disc combo pack of Gettysburg and Gods and Generals you can give to your mom. This will give you a chance to educate your mom about the origins of Mother’s Day, which will in turn make her proud of your encyclopedic knowledge of American history, and if there’s one thing that moms love more than anything else, it’s believing that their children are not total burnouts.
