John Galliano Found Guilty Of Hate Speech, Fined

John Galliano Found Guilty Of Hate Speech, FinedA Paris court has found former Christian Dior designer John Galliano guilty of making racist and anti-Semitic comments at a bar; publicly insulting someone on the basis of their religion, race, or ethnicity in France is legally actionable hate speech. Galliano was fined €17,500, or around $24,589 at current exchange.

The designer was fired by the luxury brand in March, shortly after a scandal erupted when he was arrested after a drunken altercation with a couple, and after another incident in which Galliano infamously told two strangers, "I love Hitler" was recorded on a cell-phone camera and the video was released by the Sun tabloid. As of this writing, Dior still has not appointed a creative director to replace him. Guess we now know how well the "Shaolin Monks" defense works.
