A Paris court has found former Christian Dior designer John Galliano guilty of making racist and anti-Semitic comments at a bar; publicly insulting someone on the basis of their religion, race, or ethnicity in France is legally actionable hate speech. Galliano was fined €17,500, or around $24,589 at current exchange.

The designer was fired by the luxury brand in March, shortly after a scandal erupted when he was arrested after a drunken altercation with a couple, and after another incident in which Galliano infamously told two strangers, "I love Hitler" was recorded on a cell-phone camera and the video was released by the Sun tabloid. As of this writing, Dior still has not appointed a creative director to replace him. Guess we now know how well the "Shaolin Monks" defense works.
