In incredibly sad and disturbing news, an 8-year old Arizona boy has been arrested and charged with the murder of his father and another man last Wednesday. Authorities are holding the boy on two counts of premeditated murder, which means they have reason to believe that the boy knew what he was doing and had a plan to do so. The State of Arizona currently allows charges to be filed against anyone age 8 or older, which is causing a dilemma amongst local law enforcement agencies, who are finding it difficult to reconcile the young boy's age with the brutal nature of the crime he committed. "It was such a tragedy," Benjamin Brewer, the boy's lawyer said, "You have two people dead; you have an 8-year-old in jail. It tugs at the heart strings. It's a shocker, no doubt about it." The boy is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation; he had no record of emotional, disciplinary, or psychological problems in the past. [AP] More »

Yesterday a Florida man who was denied sex by his girlfriend responded by shooting himself in the arm twice, threatening her, and passing out on the kitchen floor. Jonathon Guabello, 29, had been fighting with his galpal of five months at a local bar earlier in the evening. Guabello, who appeared to be under the influence of Xanax and alcohol, wanted to have sex when the two returned to their apartment but she refused and left the room. A few minutes later, she heard two gunshots. Guabello has been charged with firing a weapon in an occupied dwelling and domestic assault threat to do violence. [The Smoking Gun] More »

When 85-year-old Leda Smith from Pennsylvania spotted a 17-year-old would-be burglar inside her home, she knew just what to do, "I just walked right past him to the bedroom and got my gun." She then held the boy hostage with her .22-caliber revolver while she made him call 911, and then waited with him, gun ready, until the police came and arrested the boy for attempted burglary and other related offenses. Smith was excited about catching the burglar and hopes that she "broke up the (burglary) ring" that may be connected with a string of robberies in her neighborhood.
