@k8ertot: I live in a town filled with houses built in the late 1800's. I absolutely refuse to live in any apartment where I have to pay for my own heat.
I've never had one where I got to control the thermostat, though. Lucky.
@ideas of light: It's a really old hotel (on the National Register of Historic Places!) that was converted into studio apartments, so I definitely feel you on the old building thing. I used to rent a house built in 1902, and we had to go on a monthly budgeted heating plan so that we weren't taking out student loans in the winter to pay for heat.
@k8ertot: Yeah, I know people who've been absolutely destroyed by the utility bills here. I'm willing to pay electric, but heat? Hell no.
My last house was so not-airtight with such an old furnace that the (whole-house) thermostat was set to 78 all winter and ran full-blast just to keep the upstairs-most apartment somewhere in the 60's. I lived on the ground floor and it was a damn sauna in there all winter. It was insane. I can't imagine what those heating bills looked like but I'm glad they weren't my problem.
@ideas of light: Yeeeeah I'd hate to go through that. I have a friend that's in that situation, and she actually got the magnetic register covers to cover up the furnace vents in most of her apartment. Didn't totally solve the issue, but it kept her from walking into a jet of piss-warm air when she was already overheating.
I'm sorry environment, but I love keeping my apartment at industrial freezer temps and not having to pay for it. I'll be sure to recycle and reuse.
