On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal regarding Alabama's ban on the sale of sex toys, thus upholding a lower court's ruling that the sale of "any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs for anything of pecuniary value" is illegal. Essentially, this puts an end to a case that's been dragging on for nine years. But Sherri Williams, owner of Pleasures stores in Huntsville and Decatur, plans on suing again on First Amendment free speech grounds. "My motto has been they are going to have to pry this vibrator from my cold, dead hand. I refuse to give up," she said. [AP via Boing Boing]

I would say they all need to go fuck themselves, but then...

  • She Has a right to sell what ever she wishes. if she wants to sell rabbits, bullet vibrators, dildos and any thing else of the nature so be it.

See this is why i hate living in the south, everyone is hyped up on religion and "morals", when they know and the end of the day and everyone has either gone home, or went to bed they pull out huge dildos like "The Man-Handler" and go at it like there's no tomorrow.

@NoOtherWay: Not everyone. Please don't paint all us Southerners with the same broad brush.

I live in Alabama and don't see this as a huge deal. I mean obviously I think it's stupid but when you can just go online and buy pretty much any sex toy you want, I don't see how brick and mortar sex stores even stay in business.

@serreca: Actually, it's illegal to import from across state lines in some places, and so some online places won't ship to certain areas.

Because the government wants to keep your clit safe from stimulation. And other terrorism, such as.

  • Hooray Slut Machine!

I think it's Durex that started selling condoms with tiny bullet-esque vibrators attached to the base. They won't ship to Alabama.

I'm tellin' y'all. It's all about the bootlegging. Birmingham has a "Free the Hops" foundation to lobby for the alcohol limit being raised so we can imbibe something other than Coors Light.

To all my Alabama Ladies, shall we start "Free the Orgasms?" Yes. I think so.

  • @NoOtherWay: So true. Sodomy laws are really only there to keep women and gays 'in their place'. Besides, the Christian fundies don't need vibrators when they can just touch on the litters of children they've had due to that oh-so-godly aversion to contraceptives.

    @thegreatladies: I'm on board.

  • give me vibrators or give me death!

    Ya'll, "pecuniary value"? I don't get it.

@NoOtherWay: It is not just the South. It is wherever you find state governments filled with 'morally right' people. They must save you soul, because since you don't share their beliefs - you must be in need of their guidance.

These are the same types that make laws about what you can eat, since you are to impaired to chose for yourself.

  • @serreca: Damn Right. I want my delicious craft brew and my orgasm served simultaneously, thank you.

We should look into that. My community activist is just itching to get out these days.

  • Best. Motto. Ever.

  • @thegreatladies: ME THREE !

  • Count me in as a proud Alabamian who demands instant gratification. I love it here but do we need any more national publicity about how backwards we can be? Geez...thank goodness for online shopping!!

  • Hey, another Bama girl here. This shit pisses me off. It's so freaking stupid. I actually live in Huntsville and have been into Pleasures. It's a nice store, in a nice shopping center. It is not seedy at all. I remember when this crap started passing 9 or 10 years ago, I just found myself thinking WTF? Thank God for Saucy Lady. Haha. Although they are trying to keep the home parties from taking place as well. Jackasses.

  • I guess Alabama ladies will have to make sure they have detachable shower heads.

  • A friend of mine works in the porn industry, selling goods all across the country. He tells me that the vast majority of the business comes from Bible Belt states. Perhaps it's the non-church-goers who are frustrated about the lack of porn stores (unlikely, considering the THREE porn shops I pass on my way to work, here in NC), or maybe it's that all that repression makes people frustrated.

  • Love that she stole the "from my cold, dead hands" thing from the NRA.

I bet buying a gun is way easier than buying a vibrator in Alabama.

Devices used to injure/kill = OK
Devices used to enhance sexual pleasure = immoral

    Oh, the irony.

  • Can we get a "You'll have to pry my vibrator from my cold, dead hand" bumper sticker? Please?

  • I'm sorry if i came off a little narrow minded about the south thing I've lived here all of my life, and get sick of hearing about court official make laws that are a matter of choice.

  • @alicetheowl: I'd think that those people are just more likely to buy through the mail so they don't have to run into their sister in law in the porn shop.

  • I'm sure that penis pumps and things like that are legal since they're "medical". JERKS!

  • I really like the brightly colored stickers they put on most everything in the TX sex shops, saying something like, "This item intended as a gag gift or cake decoration ONLY!"

Our cakes are AWESOME down here. And highly interactive.

  • change the sign to say "health store" and sell "massagers", "lotions", and "art books"

  • Isn't there a state where it's illegal to POSSESS more than two vibrators because it means possession with intent to distribute? I think it is Texas.

I can't ever move there. I have an entire dresser drawer lined in velvet to showcase my collection.

  • not sure if anyone is still reading this but I also live in alabama and find all of this ridiculous. i can't even seem to find anywhere that will ship here. i'm looking to get dvd's so if anyone can tell me who will ship here i'd REALLY appreciate it. browneyedangel00@aol.com
