I'll tell you what to think: El Oh El.
HA! That just made my day.
Is that Liv Tyler back in the day?
It's official, we need more pussy in the advertising industry.
I agree with Archetype.
gosh, i wonder what their customer service entails.
@Archetype: damn right about that. but also need more of it in the technology industry, which is where this unfortunate problem originates (in more ways than just this one ad). I think there was a whole other thread about this same ad on another Gawker blog early this week.
Well, it's true.
@Archetype: On the contrary, there may be too many pussies in advertising - those that were born without them.
It got a smirk outta me - then again I'm only 82% feminista
It's the geek foodchain war.
I don't even know what a server is besides the thing that gets blamed for shutting down a website..in turn the server geeks bash on their clients with ads like these. But I won't pretend to know the deep inner politics of geekdom. I just want them to keep making the internet look pretty.
I think it's funny and silly!
The truth is many geeks can't even get to second base, so the idea of them even being in a position to possibly have a woman "go down" on them is giving them giant props!
(I <3 g33ks)
Advertising that humiliates its own potential buyers? I'm lost!
I'm offended by the comma splice.
Wait -- did someone mention geeks?
The ad would have worked better and reached more geeks had the model looked more androgenous (sp?)--its an equal opportunity catchphrase, after all
This ad is insulting to men AND women. Men, because it assumes if you're interested in a new server (or whatever they're selling), you mustn't have luck with women. And women because it treats us like malfunctioning objects who aren't doing what we're "supposed" to be doing if we don't go down on a guy.
Nothing makes me want to rush out and throw down for a QSOL.com Service Appliance more than the prospect of a creepily detached head of a smug top model refusing to fellate me ...
Eh, not so awful.
Now, if they had put one of Britney's lollipop photos up there with the tag, "Our servers will never go down on you, even if you're a 21 year old extra in their video," I can see how that might offend.
anybody noticed the oddly fellatio-suggestive lavender logo they've got? talk about branding.
I didn't think it was very funny, but I'm a woman who works in IT and am predisposed to take sometimes unwarranted offense at things like that. When I saw this posted on another site, however, some women commented that they originally thought it meant the woman was grumpy that her man wouldn't go down on her.
@msAnthrope: holy crap that's amazing.
I'm offended by her Robert Palmer girl makeup.
The "O" in "Our" should not be capitalized.
Why am I doing this at 5:30 ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON!?!?
It actually makes no sense with what it's attempting to do. It implies that your gf not going down on you is a negative thing, while saying the same thing about the servers. But with reference to the servers, that's a good thing, no? That's the only reason I think it's stupid. Otherwise, I don't find it offensive.
I am also disturbed by the recent arrival of fellatio ad campaigns. At least this woman has opted not to waste her 54$ chanel lipstick on a penis.
@SinisterRouge: I love that you analyzed this from the tech/server perspective. It's quite apparent that the idiot IT geek who approved the ad never did (at least not for that inconsistency).
I must be the only woman in America who married a hot sexy geek who rocks my world.
And he really is a geek, not a pseudo-geek. A Software engineer, video gaming, computer-building, internet-loving geek.
Need further proof? He's going to a video game convention this month.
But damn if he ain't fine.
I don't know... at first I LOL'd, but then I remembered all the crap times I had working IT surrounded by that sort of attitude and then it's not so funny.
@pinkerblue: You're not the only woman, because you just described my husband exactly.
@jurijuri: same here. thought it was amusing until I recalled my years at an engineering school. People in my dorm had a day of the week called "misogynist thursdays."
Unless they're marketing this product to lipstick lesbians (heavy on the lipstick!), there's the clear assumption that women aren't part of the IT workforce and buying servers.
@jurijuri: It's the best untapped market ever :o) Plus, I never have computer trouble. How awesome is that?
@jurijuri: Uh huh! I love me my hot nerd! @nyobserver: How did they not see this?
Hey! I can finally lust after someone other than the girl wearing the headset on the cover of PC Mall catalogs!
This ad is from 1998 at least. And it was pulled tout de suite as I recall, though it was so long ago. Target market was extraordinarily offended... after all, pr0n was harder to come by then and BJs weren't worksafe material.
Yeah, it's a big old "fuck you" to any woman who might be in the market for a server, whatever the hell that is. Blowjob related humor is the epitome of targeted advertising. But what do I know? Are all computer retards dudes? Don't answer that, I don't really care.
This ad should have featured Tom Cruise.
Dudes, this isn't cool. My girlfriend calls me a geek all the time and makes me fix her friends' myspace layouts (because that is of course why I learned all of that web design stuff), and I'm getting head like three times a week.
This is exactly the sort of thing we'd love crossposted on Valleywag.
@redblues: so true.
plus it would had benn more fun if it was:
our server won't go down on you. either.
@Antiheroine: see, thats what i thought.
@Nick Douglas: Exactly! We can get the Geeky Blow Job jokes from Jezebel, and they can get Megan's Superficial articles in exchange. :)
