Big Stars Inexplicably Celebrate BlackBerries
See, if I were a celeb, and I got an invite to the "U.S. launch party for the BlackBerry Tour Smartphone from Sprint" at NYC's Thompson Hotel LES, I'd probably toss it. Which is why I'm not a celeb. More » -

Amy Winehouse
Gets OwnInspires Someone Else's Clothing Line- Funny, this picture of Amy Winehouse looking "healthy and stylish" still looks off. British label PPQ is bringing the troubled singer's long-rumored fashion line to fruition — if you count PPQ "providing all materials and doing the design," as anything like having your own collection. Uma & Eva Look Great Even Though Their Movie Looks Awful
In the new film The Life Before Her Eyes, Uma Thurman, left, plays a woman who, as a child, witnessed a "Columbine-like" event which fucked her up for life. But want to know what's really fucked up? The fact Evan Rachel Wood plays Thurman's character's younger self. To quote Cher Horowitz: As if. Susan Sarandon's daughter, the painfully-beautiful Eva Amurri, also stars, and all of the aforementioned ladies were at the New York Film Society's screening of the movie last night. There were also a ton of models: Hana Soukupova, Helena Christensen, Irina Pantaeva, and Maggie Rizer, some, of course, better dressed than others. The full Good, Bad, and Ugly, plus the terrifying transformation of Evan Rachel Wood into Dita von Teese, after the jump. More » -

LOLSocialites: Money Just Can't Buy Taste
One of the reasons New York is really funny — and annoying — is because the city has "socialites": Self-important, wealthy women with ridiculous names (Byrdie Bell, Tinsley Mortimer, Susan Shin, Carrie Cloud, Valesca Guerrand-Hermes) who like to go to parties where they buy "tables" so that they can wear expensive shit, have their pictures taken, and in the process, fuel their sense of self-importance. Often, they consider these activities to be "work"! But based on last night's benefit for the Museum of the City of New York, some of them may need to look for a new job... or a new stylist. After the jump, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of a high-society event, silly names and all. More » -

Even Fashionistas Rock The Vote
While it might be easy enough to assume that the fashion industry has too much on its mind today — what with the opening of the new Gucci flagship on 5th Avenue and the fashion shows of Badgley Mischka, Rodarte, J. Mendel, Matthew Williamson, Behnaz Sarafpour, Tory Burch, and Narcisco Rodriguez — the truth is that politics are, in fact, very much in style. Among fashion designers, loyalties are divided between the two remaining Democrats. While Diane von Furstenberg ("I sincerely believe she's the best candidate"), Donna Karan, and Oscar de la Renta have all maxed out in campaign contributions for Hillary Clinton and Nicole Miller, Marc Jacobs, and Marc Bouwer have also voiced their support for HRC, while Obama has Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein at his sartorial (er, proverbial) side. Heidi Klum Makes It Work; Designs For Jordache Jeans

This Fall, We'll All Be Flappers On Acid In French Boarding Schools
New York Fashion Week kicked off on Friday at the tents in Bryant Park, and in the ensuing three days, plenty of big-name designers have given us their vision of what women can look forward to, sartorially that is, once winter passes, summer swelters, and the chill sets in again. Designers as disparate as Diane von Furstenberg and Baby Phat played with the idea of the modern flapper: Dropped hems, deco styling, thoroughly modern (Millie), all of it. But if heading for a night out at your local speakeasy is not your thing, fret not: Fashion-minded females can always play prim and proper (and somewhat naughty) by embodying the French school girl chic shown at DKNY and Tracy Reese. After the jump, and using ten representative images from each show, Dodai and I weigh in on The Good, The Bad & The Ugly from these shows (and others) following Fashion Week's first, incredibly exhausting, weekend.

The (Boozy) Bride Wore White: Planning Jenna Bush's Wedding
So, Jenna Bush is getting married this spring (which is a totally gross, opportunistic way to distract the American public from the war, btw) and her mama, Laura, has commissioned the biggest names in American fashion to submit sketches for her darling daughter's big day. (Think Jenna will get sauced at the reception?) After the jump, check out sketches of the contenders, with comments, suggestions and (not so) gentle urgings. Here stumbles the bride! More » -

National Board Of Review: The Stars Came Out, The Fab Fashions Did Not
The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures held its annual awards show last night. Yup: An actual awards show not stopped by the writer's strike! And not only did legitimate celebrities actually show up, Diablo Cody won for Best Original Screenplay for Juno and Ellen Page won Best Breakout Performance by an Actress for the same! Yay, women! But boo, too, because the ladies on display played it a little too safe, sartorially. Are the stars just out of practice now that they can't go anywhere without fear of crossing a picket line? And while we think that Jennifer Garner knocks it out of the park in this short, draped number, the rest of the looks ranged from pretty and safe to yawn-were-you-saying-something? The good, the bad, and the ugly, all after the jump.

Moe just got seated at the Nicole Miller show. Unfortunately, the instant messaging function on her phone is not working anymore. (Sabotage? Or a spilled drink?) Fortunately, her email is! Here's what she has to say so far. 7:42: "I have a seat this time. I have realized that we rank somewhere between Life & Style and Glam.com and one row ahead of a fifty-something man in sunglasses entirely dressed in camouflage with neon accents. It does seem unfair. Omg I think I see Emily Weiss! Yes!! She is staring so intently!" 7:44: "Clothes much more tailored, less vomitously pretty. I'm still not seeing how these shows are supposed to 'tell a story'." 7:47: "I'm always torn when clothes are pretty, and smart looking, devoid of stupid extraneous flourishes, obviously beautifully tailored, and yet I know anyone who would wear them I would, like, hate. It's like the way I felt in high school about J Crew. These women all work in marketing." More » -

Nicole Miller Follows In Footsteps Of Anna Wintour, Pisses PETA Off
- PETA will be protesting outside of Nicole Miller's Fashion Week show because of her use of fur. And in a (failed) preemptive strike, Miller has issued a statement promising that only 12 of 150,000 pieces to be manufactured from the Spring/Summer 2008 collection being shown will contain fur trim. She also promises to be fur-free starting with her Fall/Winter 2008 collection to be shown in February. [WWD, sub req'd]

Shocker: Daisy Fuentes' Clothing Line Produced In Sweatshops
- Daisy Fuentes' clothing line for Kohl's has been earmarked by the National Labor Committee for using sweatshop labor. The weird thing is that this is the odd celebrity sweatshop scandal where we are more surprised by Kohl's (does Vera Wang know?) than Fuentes. After all, celebrities who stoop to doing infomercials are not, we bet, keeping close watch of their personal brands. [WWD]

Romance Is Dead At Nicole Miller Bridal
When our very own Moe Tkacik headed to Nicole Miller Bridal to be fitted for a bridesmaid's dress for a wedding she's in this summer, we had to send overzealous fashion-worshipper Jenny Gerson along for the ride. A salesgirl with the best booty in the business was there, but the free champagne both women had hoped for was nowhere to be found. More photos and more on Moe and Jenny's adventures after the jump. Ms. Miller Goes To Washington
- Designer Nicole Miller, Harper's Bazaar's Glenda Bailey, and other fashion poohbahs hit D.C. yesterday to discuss a bill to protect fashion designs under intellectual property laws. We were all for this until we learned the measure "could have an impact on retailers such as H&M and Zara, which reinterpret runway designs and trends to sell to the public at lower prices." Girls, go call your congressman now and complain. Recreated Prada for the people, please!!! [WWD]
