Baltimore/D.C. area Jezzies - the snow's coming down and I'm getting hungry, so I'm debating if I should go out across the street to get something from 7-Eleven. Just how bad is it out there? Is it worth being out for a few minutes?

Guys, I am so so sad about something. Today I have been heartbroken over two different stories pertaining to the mistreatment of adopted children, one child was beaten to death in my area and one is a little girl I know who is just not being cared for properly. Since my dad was abused by his adopted parents, this both enrages me and hurts me so much. I don't understand it at all.

Okay so recently I wrote something here asking if any of you know anything about Tracy Anderson workout DVD's and what you think of them--I'm asking again because I'm hoping for some more opinions because I'm REALLY thinking about getting one...

I've heard great things about her method and people getting awesome results, but there's something about HER that I can't stand and I don't want to waste my money...

Thoughts?

We had a fight and haven't made up yet. It was my fault, so I e-mailed and he hasn't replied. I have so much work and I can't concentrate because I keep thinking about it, and him. How do you scare away unpleasant thoughts to make room for obscure historical records? Sigh.

So there was one Superbowl commercial that I just did not understand.

It was the Dockers one about "wearing the pants." I do not understand it because the men without pants looked quite happy and carefree. They were cheerfully out in a field singing about not wearing pants. That sounds fun to me.

Who wants to wear pants? I mean unless it's really cold. "I wear no pants" sounds like a good thing to me.

Note: I am snowed in and have had just enough beer to be dangerous.

So I'm watching Buffy right now and I can't help but think Robert P. watched Angel in particular on how to be an angsty, cradle robbing vampire boyfriend.
Of course Angel was actually kind of endearing.

IMO First Lady Obama is awesome for addressing the childhood obesity issue.

I only hope that the parents of America get their shit together - oh, I'm sorry (tone, tone) - - -

ahem
I hope that the parents of America show how much they care about their children and make better decisions for them.

I hope the leaders of cities and states allocate resources so that parents are able (!) to make better choices - see Urban Agriculture, local farm incentives, cessation of Farm Subsidies as we know them and revision of Public School menus,
to name a few.

@Scout: I love that she's addressing the real issues-food deserts, unhealthy school lunches, lack of safe play space, affordability of healthy food, need for education about what to eat. It's infuriating and disingenuous that people yuk it up about "fat, lazy Americans" like this is how people want to be or became out of apathy. There are underlying issues that need to be addressed before this is going to stop being such a widespread problem for people. Michelle O rocks so hard for this.

Image of Scout Scout 09:56 PM

@Hooplehead: it would be disingenuous to disregard that there, in fact, unhealthy, lazy people too - I've met plenty, thanks.

But I know that such a small sector of the population (above) shouldn't really factor into the bigger issues of which are being addressed (and what you outlined above) and apply to a majority.

Our "food system" is entirely out of whack and in need of a major overhaul. indeed.

I can't wait until the day that urban areas have inner city agriculture, community based activities and safe places in which to participate, green spaces, paths/walkways and eco friendly mass transit. All of those things will cause a huge shift in something like Juvenile obesity when coupled with parental responsibility.

#groupthink

Image of Hooplehead Hooplehead 10:23 PM

@Scout: There are certainly unhealthy and lazy people of larger sizes-as there are lazy, unhealthy people of smaller sizes. My point is that they are not representative of the overweight population in general in the way that many people would have you believe. The way that people talk about obesity can be so reductive and unhelpful. So it's heartening to see a program that took more thought than just saying "get off the couch and stop eating Cheetos." Because for a lot of people the issues run much deeper than that.

@la_periodista: yeah, watching that Blueprint America last night made me think "yessss!"

They could sprout up rather decent sized gardens and provide organic fruits , veggies, herbs and chicken eggs to the inner city.

I would find it most interesting if the huge manufacturing city known as Motor City blossomed into Farm Town. ha!

Image of Scout Scout 10:41 PM

@Hooplehead: i'm neither lazy nor unhealthy and I lend that entirely to my mother and the way she raised me. She was a bit of a Pioneer Woman who always turned whatever space we might have had for a backyard, neighbor's backyards (she was very convincing) and window boxes into veggies and herbs .

In fact, she turned the courtyard of the Rocking Horse Apartments in Fullerton into a community garden
circa 1976.

She made all my clothes, baked her own bread, bought in bulk (ex: 25 lbs sacks of carrots, 10 lb sacks of flour) and would sell, for an inexpensive price, to the neighbors - or barter for something. She was a great cook and would often make food for neighbors in exchange for their babysitting me when she was at any one of her three jobs.

We walked, rode bikes and took the bus - she never had a car.

She was motherfucking McGyver - making what little we had work ... for everyone.

And she taught me the value of things and instilled an impeccable work ethic.

I can't say that for many parents these days and this isn't just my being biased, either.

I have reached the point of no return on my bitterness. I can no longer think about Valentines Day without becoming really depressed. I used to be able to treat it like any other day, but now the idea of staying home alone and maybe getting a card from my mom makes me want to cry.

Even worse, ever time I think I'm going to actually use a dating site and really try to find someone, I take one look at the people who contact me and get the idea that maybe I'm just doomed to spinsterhood.

@CynicalPink: I'm sending you so many good vibes right now, I can't even express.

I've never been one to get really invested in Valentine's day, for the most part I've always scorned it as kind of hallmark-y. But yeah, I've still had my fair share of times where I still just hated the living daylights out of it with all the passion my eternally-spinstery self could muster. Could you maybe start working to make alternate plans now so that the day itself and all the heinous expectations that come with don't take you by surprise? Drinks with friends, or a trip to a concert or a really cool museum?

Are there any of your friends you can spend Vday with? Some of my friends like to throw Love Sucks parties or get together at dive bars-anywhere the moony couples are guaranteed not to be.
